On the left side next to the keyboard... what are those two buttons or lights? One looks like a powercord. But there is a battery light infront of the laptop. But the other shows a USB symbol? What does that do? tell me a USB port is in use?

Edit:*** ok found the answer in the PDF. They are lights

USB power and USB charger. Not really sure what that means too :p

They linked the ILF90 PDF wrong so here is the right link:

One light to show if on battery or powercord I think.
    One light for USB.

I agree, really looking cheap. But the price is according to this... Very very cheap from what I read about. If you want power for cheap, that may be the best choice.

I actually think it looks pretty good. But that last picture? Is that how it actually looks? Because that picture sure doesn't look good in my eyes.

Well, it's no V1, that's for sure...but those images at least make it look slightly better than before...

Still, if it actually offered the 8600M GT with GDDR3 it's might be worth getting even without the looks, the business-class keyboard, the magnesium roll cage, the hdmi port, the spill-proof keyboard, the anti-drop HD...the....

As is almost always the case the pictures simply do not do it justice.

With the glossy metallic finish it looks very rich in person.

Well I don't mind the bland design...in fact I like plain.

...it's just the degree of roundness on the corners of the lid combined with the bezel shape that gets to me...I can't even describe it well, but it just looks...clunky :p

No, I was just saying that having the 8600M GT w/ GDDR3 might make up for not having those to some extent for me personally.

    Palidin,

So you've had the opportunity to see it in person? I'm always concerned with druability. What is the case made from - is it plastic or magnesium alloy? Is the screen protection good?

It is made of polycarbon alloy just like 99% of all laptops. IF a laptop says something about magnesium alloy, or brushed aluminum, it is almost always just a veneer for looks not strength or durability. As a matter of fact both of those metals are scratched fairly easily so if you are not careful with them the gorgeous new look can be short lived.

What do you mean by good screen protection? What screen protection are you asking about?

I'm sorry, "good screen protection" is rather subjective. I've never seen a Compal but I know they have a good reputation for durability.

How much force is needed to apply to the cover before you see ripples in the screen? There doesn't appear to be mechanical latches on the IFL90, are there magnetic or is the latch held closed strictly through the hinges? If so, can I expect the hinges to last for 3 years?

I'm really close to just ordering one of these. The GPU issue isn't that important to me. I just want to make sure that I'm buying a well built system because I do travel and will need this off my desk often.

Actually you probably have seen several Compal's since they are the second largest laptop ODM in the world. See the The Compal Notebook FAQ [updated 4/12/07]

They have an excellent reputation for quality and durability, especially those built for the Channel as opposed to those that end up with Multi National brands on them (that is Dell, Toshiba, Sony, HP etc.). You see the Channel versions are not beaten down on cost by the Multi Nationals and are considered "Compal's Pride" They may cost a little more as a result, but you definitely get a better product, and better customer support from most of the Compal custom builders in the Channel.

There is no way to answer your question about "how much force" needs to be applied to the LCD cover before you see ripples in the screen, but I can tell you that the LCD breakage on Compal units is less than 1/10th of 1%.

There are no mechanical latches for LCD closure. The pre-production units had hinge snap closures, and that is probably what the production units will have but we can't be sure until we get them next week (or it could be the week after next). There is no way to give you an honest answer on how long they will last...only time will tell. All I can tell you is they have been torture tested and stood up to the 10,000 closures machine.

The Channel represents just under 20% of the laptop market. It is all of the brands that are not the Multi National Corporation's brands.

The big Multi National Corporations give the ODMs their specs and ask them to compete for their million piece orders, so the ODMs have to skimp on build quality to win the contract. A difference of a few cents can win a million + piece order.

On the other hand the ODMs can build exactly what they want into a barebones laptop for Channel builders, who then can custom build the laptop using the exact components specified by our customers.

i like the looks of this machine. Threre are a lot of plainer and blander laptops out there than this. Great value/great deal on this to. Nice job on getting this for so inexpensive on powernotebooks.com, Donald.
Think about it, very nice nvidia dx10 8600gt, santa rosa, c2d, fingerprint scanner, 2.0megapixel camera...for a very good price.
    I might purchase this soon.
