I've had a Compal IFL90 for almost 2 years now (which I bought from XVX Online, who appear to have vanished along with their warranties and support team), and for about a month now, the laptop suddenly turns itself off... especially if I've been using it for a while for intense stuff like video or graphics editing.

I tried many things to resolve it but nothing seems to work. Could it be that it is overheating? Is there a test I can put it thru? Maybe a software that would monitor and sound an alarm that its getting overheated BEFORE the machine suddenly goes black?

seems like it's overheating. When was the last time you cleaned your vents?

download HWMonitor and see what your temps are

Hmm I never cleaned my vents...I just always make sure they are not blocked by anything... I will try the software link you recommended. How would you suggest I clean the vents? is there a tutorial somewhere?

    Thanks!

    Just checked my temps:

HDD 42 degrees in all 3 spots
GeForce 8600M GT (GPU Core) 69 degrees in all 3 spots
Core 0 and Core 1: 61 degrees in value column

Note that these temps are not when I'm doing After Effects or Premiere stuff...I will keep watch on the temps when Im rendering..... But are these normal so far?

I am really no expert on laptop temps (yet) but from what I have seen I have never had an HDD run that warm before. The graphics and CPU look ok though.

okay, those temps are obviosly quite high. Buy a can of compressed air and blow through the radiator fins. You'll be amazed by the amount of dust coming out of there.

The 8600m GT should not idle a 70C. Your vents are obstructed. Open the panel over the fan and clean the heatsink fins.

I don't know guys but I'm using JFL92 for a year now and that are normal temps. GPU is ilding at 68-71C, HDD is 42-49C. Max GPU was 94C, true, it was overclocked and that was during 3D06 benchmarking, but I never had any problems.
Vent is not the problem, it's the setting at which the fan kicks in to cool the CPU and GPU, coz they are connected with the heatpipe and the fan kick in when the CPU is at 55C or if the GPU is at 90C. That's when it is on highest speed. In my case the fan kicks in at 55C and stops at 49C. Thus the GPU is idleing at about 70.

    OK. What's your temps?
