I already preordered my IFL90 with the 1680x1050 screen, but I only recently discovered the Sager np2090 which I can configure with the 1280x800 screen and a 8600gt for a lot less than the IFL90.

What are the pros and cons of these two screen sizes? I plan to be doing a lot of high end gaming and a lot of casual web browsing as well.

Well if you mean 1680x1050(also applies for anything higher like WUXGA, then the difference is that with an higer resolution you have more room/real estate to work with but text is smaller(you can remedy the problem by raising your system Text level(DPI) or getting a stronger prescription glasses or a magnifying glass ;).

In gaming i doubt you would be able to play at a good level of settings at native resolution(WSXGA). You will probably have to lower the resolution.

I personally would choose the WSXGA because i like the extra real estate is offers.

The WSXGA+ (1680x1050) version also comes with a larger capacity battery and better GPU as well.

The 8600m gt in the Sager NP2090 is for both the WXGA and WSXGA and i think both resolution options have the same battery( 9-cell)

woops I meant 1680x1050. And no it doesn't. The Sager np2080 (IFL90 rebrand) on xotic comes with the 512mb 8600gt and a 9cell battery no matter which resolution you get

I actually emailed Xotic about the NP2090. They said the 9-cell battery only comes standard with the WSXGA screen, which is basically what their website says as well, but I was confused because SagerNotebook.com and at least PowerNotebooks.com have the 9-cell battery come standard on both.

I'd go with the WXGA screen now, but I won't be getting anything until around Christmas.

I would say go with the WSXGA. I really like the screen on my HEL 80 -- find it very comfortable. 1280x800 feels constricting to me. Also, while you will notice it on the desktop, you can probably get away with gaming at 1280x800 with 1680x1050 native, and the less demanding games will run ok at the higher resolution.

I'm just discovering Compal/Sager. Can somebody tell me about the quality I should expect on the Segar NP2090/Compal IFL90 vs. a Sony, HP, or Asus display?

    I hear good things.

Supposed to be somewhere between business class and consumer class. And seeing how HP and Sony are both consumer classes it should be better.

Asus is also suppose to be very good quality, except for the price of a Sager np2090/Compal ifl90, you'd have to settle for an F3 or A8 series, which are the low end budget classes of Asus. So the build quality of those aren't as good as the other asus'.

I've ordered a IFL90 as well but there is one thing that concerns me though. I have a 20" monitor at home and only max the resolution at 1152x864.

I like to see things easily and not strain my eyes. If the resolution of the IFL90 is 1680x1050 I probably couldn't see anything on it at all. Should I cancel my preorder and go with the sager instead?

If you are comfortable with 1152x864 on a 20" monitor you will not be happy with a 15.4" screen with 1680x1050.

The Sager NP2090 with the WXGA (1280x800) resolution would suit you much better.

    Same question, different monitor :)

I use a 4:3 form 19" LCD on my desktop with the resolution at 1280x1024. I dont feel it is borderline small at all, and I sit 24" away and can read it just fine, in fact its large enough to read a few feet away clearly. Is the 1680X1050 a lot smaller in your opinion? I am going to try and get to a store soon so I could see what resolutions they have got. (In Best Buy I wont hold my breath for a 15.4" past WXGA though) :(

My external LCD is 17" with a 1280x1024 resolution. And the pixel pitch is already larger than my 15.4" WSXGA+

So, the difference will be greater when compared to your 19".

is it more likely to get dead pixels on the 1680 x 1050 or the 1280x800?

There would be no difference...except they would be much smaller on the 1680x1050 screen.

just wondering... i havent really been able to find any laptops in any local stores with any of the higher resolutions and right now i use a 17" desktop lcd at 1280 x 1024 specs
and just wondering what resolution you guys would suggest for the IFL90 and if you think it would be a big change to go to the WSXGA+?

The wide screen equivalent of 1280x1024 is 1680x1050 so you won't see much difference between what you have and WSXGA+ in the IFL90.
