Ha ha that would be a good way for profs to keep check on kids with laptops.

Yeah, it would be pretty handy for them. The professors could spot the lights, but since the lights are situated on the side of the notebook it would be more likely that you would just bug the crap out of the people on either side of you. A good way to make friends the first week of college, Lol.

So since the IFL90 comes with DDR2 video memory and the G1S comes with DDR3 video memory, doesn't that make the G1S better at gaming?

How much better is DDR2 over DDR3?

The G1S is better in gaming more because of the memory clock speeds that the G1S's 8600m GT has at 700 MHz, rather than the fact that it's GDDR3. The IFL-90 is GDDR2 (or 3, whatever) but it doesn't matter because its memory's clocked at 400 MHz.

With a bit of overclocking, the IFL-90 should catch up to the G1S and close the gap even further, but who knows how dangerous it may be to overclock the memory up to 700 MHz.

With the problems of light leakage and graininess reported on glossy G1S and Dell 1520 wsxga screen it'll be interesting to compare them to the matte screens on the IFL90. Maybe we were spared lessor quality screens. I've only heard good things about the matte wsxga.

I have yet to see anyone clock a DDR2 8600 past 500mhz. It is in fact plain DDR2 used in these cards not GDDR2. If your card used GDDR2 it would be even farther handicapped. GDDR2 ran hot and had remnants of plain DDR in its architecture. It is a fallacy that DDR2 is essentially GDDR3. There exist a number of differences that allow GDDR3 to reach faster speeds more efficiently. Less energy equates to a cooler card at greater speeds. It would be impractical if not impossible to clock plain DDR2 at those speeds in a laptop. The scores that appear to reach the stock G1s are gained by increasing the clock speed more than the memory. This means the cards will still perform significantly worse in memory intensive situations. The GDDR3 cards can also overclock to a far greater degree. One should also remember that all DDR2 are not created equal. Some run at slower speeds and cannot be magically overclocked to that of superior DDR2. In any case the 8600 is still a fine card that will be proficient in games for years to come. I still think the compal is probably an excellent machine. I discussed ddr2 and GDDR3 in this thread.

So I guess I was mistaken if we can OC the Compal to 700 MHz, oh well, can't have everything in one machine can we? ;)

I seriously considered the compal before my purchase. I’m very enamored with my G1s, but I think the compal is a suitable alternative.

When i first looked at this thread it seemed to amaze how the same "idea" comes into everybody's head. I was thinking when i order my np2090 that i wanted an asus with the same "modifications" and the g1s was the closest to it.

..I also wanted the w7j because it came in white, and i liked that color...

So i also came to this comparison..
    i ordered the np2090..
but from what i have seen so far..
and since green is my fav color..
i think i would like seeing the g1s more xD..

...but i am on a budget...

Hypersonic sells the Compal IFL90 (Aviator SR5) with the 8600M GT with GDDR3. I wonder if Xotic does too. That would suggest that with Hypersonic, you can get a IFL90 that should equal the G1S and still save a few bucks

Syntax, what kind of games (if any) are you playing on your 2090? Do you have it yet?

Aside form minor light leakage on the bottom of the screen I am completely satisfied with the glossy screen. The picture is brilliant and does not suffer from any sort of "graininess."

A lot of us have doubts as to Hypersonic's sales pitches, it seems like they have their information wrong/outdated. Check out this thread and laugh at some of their website mistakes (like stating an 8600 is a 7950 :p).

I don't have it yet, so I can't comment on game performance, but I do plan to put my usual suite of games such as M2TW, Battlestations Midway, Battlefield 2, HL2, etc. :)

I'll be relieved when I see reports of people getting their machines (and even more when I find myself among those people). There have been a few reports but not enough to convince me yet that things are flowing smoothly.

Edit: got an email from Donald that does indicate that things are getting better! I'm more optimistic now than I was earlier. :D

Even after roughly 6 weeks of research and exploding brains and major headaches, I am back to these two machines. Yeah, fun to be me sometimes.

I know that with the G1S, I can have the notebook on hand by next week or possibly Friday if I chose faster shipping. However, if I were to order the IFL90/NP2090 today, would my expected receiving date be somewhere around 4 weeks from now or could I possibly get it sooner? I leave for school on the 17th and as much as I have put the purchase off, I really need to have this notebook soon. Am I better off just taking the loss of $300 and buying the G1S?

Well if you think the increased performance of the G1s is worth the $300 and if you don't mind the looks, then go for it. If not, then wait on the IFL90.

No one but the resellers can properly tell us how the shipping of these laptops are going, but hopefully, the shipment of IFL-90 stock is coming in at large quantities and more frequently now that Compal's got their production line of the IFL-90s in full swing now.

I took a look at Xotic's forum and they will be getting another shipment within the next 5-9 business days. So, that translates to getting all of the pre-orders, then starting with the recent orders, then finally I come around. Yeah as much as I want to have this notebook because of the price, I'm going to have to just buy the G1S. I'm saying that like it's a disappointment. I know I will love it. I'll just take extra care of it to make it last 4 years so the price will be justified.

Hope you guys get yours as soon as possible. Give a hand to all the resellers for all the hard work that they are putting into getting these machines out to you. You have to remember that they are not the big conglomerates with thousands of notebooks ready to be made. They are small resellers with limited supply that are trying their hardest to fulfill the demands of their customers. That's why they're getting my business and not Dell or Sony.

Where are you finding a G1S at 300$ more than the IFL90 with a similar configuration? A stock G1S here
is $1805 while a IFL90 here comes in at roughly $1829.42 with the same configuration of RAM, CPU, GPU, HD, OS, etc. That makes the IFL90 more expensive and the G1S comes with a backpack and Logitech mouse. Compal makes a great notebook but choose it for its quality because realistically the prices are similar to the G1S.

You are not matching the warranties.

Add $139 for the 3 year warranty on the G1S, and the customer has to pay the shipping.

With both Xoticpc and PowerNotebooks.com the 3 year warranty is standard, and we pay for Next Business Day shipping both ways. We also offer Lifetime 24/7 DOMESTIC tech support.

Also, why spend the money for the T7500 processor when it doesn't really give you any significant performance increase over the T7300? Why pay for Bluetooth if you have no use for it? Why be forced to buy an Operating System if you don't need one.

How about the "No Return" policy with ASUS? Both Xoticpc and PowerNotebooks.com offer a 15 day return policy...no questions asked...no re-stocking fee.

So there are lots of reasons to select the IFL90, and there are lots of reasons to select the G1S. Trying to declare one of them as "Supreme" is a futile effort.

Yes, the warranty is one year longer but on the site I linked shipping is free for the G1S. Also, that site belongs to Ken from GenTechPC and I have communicated with him more than several times and he has been nothing but helpful and informative. Im sure you are very helpful too but I am making a point about how the low price of the IFL90 is over hyped. Oh and I believe my friend ordered a Sager NP5790 ULTRA from you, www.powernotebooks.com, on June 19th and still has not received his notebook. He did not receive any response whatsoever from you as to the delay until he took the initiative and emailed you. I dont think the G1S is "supreme" by any margin. They are both great notebooks and the Compal is probably a better deal if you like that look. I myself was looking at purchasing one until the shipment dates were pushed back.

I don't really get pointing that out, it's arbitrary, and doesn't support or detract from anyone's arguement. Unless you're trying to be smart, either that or you're calling Donald out on this.

I think the biggest selling point of the IFL90 is that it's customizable, the T7500 in particular. And the option to choose which screen res was a huge plus for me. I just don't like my resolutions too high.

That bit is more for Donald. Im not "calling him out," but my friend happened to be speaking to me on Pidgin and we were conversing over the laptop he doesn't have. I think it would be nice and all if he could it get it sooner rather than later because we are having a few LAN parties before we all go our separate ways to college and it would be great if my friend could attend. I think powernotebooks is a great company and the customer reviews speak for themselves. I would just like my friend to receive his laptop considering he has been charged for it.

Sorry if this is obvious, but it doesn’t appear that you offer a zero bright dot policy standard. I’ve even heard that asus will replace a screen with a single dead pixel in the 30 days(they are just that nice). I would much rather have the 30 day pixel policy than an additional year. However, other people aren’t as bothered by bright pixels as me. Asus has a real American service team based in California, so I wouldn’t expect general issues to be handled any worse. I believe most companies have lifetime phone support. They pay for 2 day shipping instead of 1 if that matters. The return policy depends entirely on where you buy the g1s. Ultimately, it comes down to whether configurability is important to you. I knew I wanted fairly high specs, bluetooth etc. so the g1s price was comparable. I would have gotten the 2.0 processor, but the GDDR3 bag and mouse more than compensated. It’s completely dependent on personal preference. Some may get the compal simply because they don’t appreciate the g1s looks, others due to the fact that they have no use for maximizing specs. I think your comment merely continues the argument you wish to end. You imply the compal is a better value which can easily be contested. Obviously, I’m biased towards the G1s, as you are towards the compal. I still think you could have given the pros/cons and not simply suggest your warranty/service/configurability is better.

There is nothing more that the resellers can do in the matter, though. It isn't like they're sitting on stockpiles of computers, just to watch people sweat.

I agree it’s more compal that dropped the ball, but it does seem for a good reason. Rather than having defective bezels they delayed production. I would much rather have a non-defective laptop than receive it on time. I suppose he could send email updates, but they are a small company beset with current orders plus delays.

Both Powernotebooks and XoticPC offer a 15 day no question return. If there is a dead or bright pixel that bothers me I'd use that.

If there is no restocking fee that definitely negates that issue. However, I just thought it odd that he mentioned that none where superior after essentially asserting the compal is the better value. I suppose I overreacted to his post. I was board and really didn’t have anything better to do.

You'll have to forgive me for beating at a dead horse here, but im in a huge dilema. I dont know which to get, but i think im leaning more towards the G1s.

Im a first year University student in england. I started on September the 28th and i am STILL without a laptop!

Im taking multimedia design (which is basically digital media). The notebook will be used for writing an essay here and there, surfing/doing research, doing a fair bit of gaming, watching dvds or media of some sort and of course more importantly, using photoshop, web development tools, possibly flash, video editing and possibly 3D animation(should i get the software to install).

Firstly, the UK equivalent for the Compal IFL90 is the Rizeon IFL90, however Rizeon are slightly behind in technology in comparison to the US models.

    The Screen
To begin with, there is no choice in screen in the IFL90. You get a Glossy WXGA+ 1440 x 900. Personally i prefer the one is the G1S as it has a better native resolution (this also affects the 3Dmark06 result slightly because of the default res for the test) and a nicer ratio. Some people have complained that the screen in the G1S is grainy, but apparently that has a fix and goes beyond fixing and improves the quality. What bothers me about the IFL90, is that the WXGA in the UK model is known for being pale.*EDIT of course i forgot to mention the G1S has the WSXGA and a good screen is important for my line of work*

    1-0 to the G1S.

Processors, pretty much the same here, i heard a complaint that the G1S when unplugged and the battery goes below 95%, the processor seriously under-performs, but a slight modification of turning off the Thermal Monitor 1 & 2 has proved to fix this issue (and improved Super Pi calculations to 21s?) at least until a BIOS update comes.

    GPU
After reading a user review in the Rizeon boards on this forum, the said user reported an embarrasing 3Dmark06 score of just under 3000 points, however a driver update brought it just up to roughly 3200 points.

NOTE: the Rizeon IFL90 has the 8600M GT 512MB on DDR2 memory unlike the US GDDR3 Version. The G1S model however maintains its 256MB GDDR3.

Sure 512MB DDR2 is pretty much the same as 256MB GDDR3, but id rather have the GDDR3. (I know all about the differences in the two memory types etc) and it gets better results on the 3Dmark06. Sure these are synthetic benchmarks and real world tests can count, but ive had enough real world proof from both to feel more comfortable with the G1S GPU.

    2-0 for the G1S.

    Sound Quality
Reviews suggest the IFL90 has sound quality that are astoundingly good for a notebook, just as reviews have suggested the G1S sound quality is rubbish even for a notebook. (however when i go home for Christmas, i will most likely bring back a set of cheap speakers i have lying around at home that should do the job). In the meantime i have my headphones but speakers are quite important for me. (I watched a video off youtube and the G1S sound seems alright to me?)

2-1 the IFL90 gets that one.

    Build Quality & Design
Reviews suggest the IFL90 is pretty 'solid' and can hold its own, while the G1S reviews suggest that it is solid, strong, whatever you like, and lives to its motto 'built like a rock'.

I dont doubt the build quality of the IFL90, but aesthetically it looks like cheap plastic. I like the simple, plain, clean design of the IFL90, but i feel a little more couldve been done to complement whats under the hood. The material just looks all very cheap and fragile to me, however solid and strong it may be. The keyboard seems to hold its own with little to no flex and touchpad seems to be great after adjusting the settings a bit. (I read one review someone did on a test model and it said the keyboard felt like it had a slight bump over the left side of the panel, which worried me slightly).

Im sure its the same stuff in the G1S almost, but the coating over the carbon fibre and the aluminium makes me feel like it has a stronger build and not as fragile. It also shows the ammount of effort and detail put into the notebooks.

While some may find the G1S ugly, I think its quite sleek. I like the Coating over the carbon fibre that gives it a glossy look and the asus badges on it. I like the detail on the touchpad and the brushed aluminium palm-rest is a BIG plus for me and i love the stealth-black paint on it. I especially love the sharp angled edges, reminds me of a stealth bomber almost, but ****ing goddamn, did they really have to put that geeky **** on it? the screen has a massive forehead for what? that glowing eye is the cheesiest thing ive ever seen, it just shouts geek power. and the glowing lights, ffs i might as well put NOS tanks on the back end if i want to make it all 'super cool!' - BUT i am willing to see past all of that. I will disable all the glowing **** if i do get it and probably paint over that eye thing or cover it some how.

so i im afraid thats 3-1 to the G1S.

    Heat & Noise
Im pretty sure both are on par here. Nothing to comment on really, they both do a good job in these areas (although maybe i should invest in a cooling mat).

Otherwise the only things left to comment on, are Price (well the IFL90 customized with a T7300 instead of a T7500, and a 7200rpm over the ASUS 5400rpm HDD) the IFL90 comes up to about £962 and the G1S retails at £1099.96 and the way i see it, its not too big of a difference.

The problem with the Rizeon IFL90 is that custom built always takes longer. And small companies always the last to get their parts delivered on time to them. Then there is still the build time and the delivery time.

im afraid my patience is running low. It has been a month and a half since ive started Uni. I had ordered a laptop with my dads credit card while he was still here, but that fell through for security reasons and so i had to wait until my bank account was opened and my card had arrived till i could place an order. (the bank didnt help as they took a month to get me a debit card from the north of england to the south).

Ive finally got a card with some money on after all this wait. I cant really bare waiting longer (its starting to affect my work and my social life! i have to go to the library everytime i need to use a computer!)

If i ordered the G1S on monday, i could get express next-day delivery and have it at my door step by tuesday (if there is relay time delay, wednesday at the latest).

Well having written it all out, point for point has kind of further influenced my decision to get the G1S...

    What are your thoughts? :D

You've certainly done your study work :p
Both laptops are great laptop and I don't see you'll go wrong with going Asus G1S. To be honest G1S was a really really close candidate to my laptop choice but I've changed my mind in last min and got myself a Ifl-90 instead.
    1. IFL-90 was cheaper at the time of purchasing of laptop.
    2. Sound quality as review suggested IFL-90 has above average speaker.
    3. IFL-90 is more appealing in design than G1S for me. I can't imagine myself bringing a flashy G1S to work lol But I do agree with you that Compal should do little bit more work on chassis it sure does has some plastic feeling.
    4. Heat issue, several members been expressing their concern on GPU temp going over 90 degree Celcius when gaming in asus section although it seems normal for G1S for powering such powerful video card.

But by saying above comments, Asus G1S is a solid laptop.
Let that be restless nights for you and crazy on gaming :p

haha, yeah. Ive been mulling over this for so long and been on the fence about it the whole time, but i think ive finally picked my side.

Yeah, it would be a bit embarrasing to take it around lol, but in my case i dont need to bring it to lectures with me for any reason. Plus it wouldnt fit on the desks we have there. And the workshops for practical work have some pretty high-power equipment so i dont need it there either. I really just needed something back in my room where i could catch up on work if i havent finalized it in class.

If the Rizeon IFL90 was really a Compal or a SagerNP2090, i think i would re-consider, but the screen is more important to me than the sound quality for what i need to get done.

So yeah, i think i'll be pretty happy with the G1S. Going to place an order on monday morning :)
