Yep, that looks like a reasonable explanation to explain the discrepancy. Thanks, wave.

You want to try overclocking the memory? See how far you can take it?

If you do overclock, use coolbits, it is a built in feature of nvidia drivers. You wil need a certain file to access it though. The guys on this board can help you find it.
Simply boost up the clock speeds and then run the "test" button. If the card is unstable, coolbits will NOT let you apply it to your card. No harm can come to your computer with coolbits....it is what the nvidia factory uses to factory overclock their cards.

coolbits don't work with vista nvidia drivers, you will need to use the new rivatuner currently. And I wouldn't o/c anything unless you are comfortable with doing so or know what you are doing. Let me do that :D

Be careful not to yank up the speed real high.. Push it up by increments of 10 or so.. And if you are not comfortable doin it, just leave it..

Not worth it to lose ur laptop over a few fps/points..

Just use the newest ati tools, it's compatible with nvidia. Just open up the rotating spike cube thingie and then raise the core slowly, set clock, scan for artifacts. No artifacts after a minute or so, raise it again a little. Keep doing this until artifacts start to appear. Do the same for memory. You'll find your max OC clocks after awhile.

No, you will hear a DING! and then you will see yellow spots/line that form in the picture with the cube. That will in turn reset your No errors for xxx seconds. So if you hear the DING and/or yellow lines/spots, turn your clock/memory speed down.

It should be about the same way you update the bios on a Compal HEL80, so this sticky of the compal subforum should tell you how to do it.

Edit: you dont have to download from the link in step 1, you already have the .exe file

the .exe file doesn't burn a cd it just fails to load a rom image when you open it. would manually burning a boot cd work?

Bleh. You need a DOS bootdisk, either USB-floppy drive + floppy disk or a dos boot CD. Then onto that CD you'd burn apart from having it a DOS boot CD the contents of the zip file.

If you choose the floppy way, make sure you have good floppies, do a long format on each, then just pop them as DOS FAT, make one bootable and the other well fill it up with PHLASH16.exe and the BAT file and whatever says in the BAT file (i think it's the .WPH bios rom, IFT00110.WPH to be precise, so get that one).

Boot from the usb floppy drive (it's 'f12' during bootup screen on EL80 to obtain a boot device choice menu), chuck in the boot-disk, let it boot, remove boot disk, put in disk with bios+bat+phlash utility, a: [enter], IFT00110.BAT[enter], wait till it's done. ta-da. preferably have the laptop on battery + mains.

Personally, I'd go with the cd way. Get a CD-RW disk, burn it as DOS bootable cd + contents of the zip file, done, boot from it. The cd-rom prolly will come up as r: so use 'r:' instead of 'a:', the rest of the above instructions applies.

I'm not really familiar with this. Can I only use a CD-RW disk? or can I also use a CD-R disk? I think it probably can, but you specifically said: CD-RW. Can I use a CD-R for the BIOS update?

makes no difference, for OS data is data, whatever way you provide it. It's just not worth it in my opinion to burn 3MB on a 650-700MB cd-r.

Donald, from powernotebooks, just posted elsewhere that they are expecting the IFL90's to arrive Monday. If that turns out to be the case, I would expect them to start churning them out a couple of days after Monday.

/me crosses his fingers, and gets back to his mai-tai...

I get that waiting this long can be painful, but really (even in my case) there's not a whole lot of reason to be so anxious. I'm sure for some of you there is a genuine need to get it soon, but for most us it's just that we really want our computers.

For example, it's not even mid July yet and there are people who need it late July/August and they're going crazy over it. Give it a little. And if it's for school, don't worry, in most cases you aren't going to be using a laptop the very first day of school. And a week without a laptop isn't going to kill you as a lot of people dont' have laptops period.

    just my take on it.

EDIT: If it's really hard for you, stop visiting this site. It doesn't help and only adds to the anxiety. Say you're depressed. Visiting a self help site filled with other depressed people doesn't make you feel any better.

I can't understand why, but if you're so impatient as to getting a laptop, why bother buying online to begin with? I mean, there's a wait time on that too isn't there? There's the processing, the shipping, the support, the hassle if it comes around, the packaging, etc. I say just let it be, Donald or Justin can't really do anything because of Compal's prehistoric shipping methods, can they? ;)

I agree with lemur. School starts August 15th for me but I am going on vacation on the 21st of July. I need my laptop before that because I come back from vacation on August 11th.
