If you could get the PowerPro J 10:15 (Compal IFL90) WSXGA+ with either Matte or Glossy screen, which would you prefer?

It appears as if the first few shipments of this version of this model will be coming in with the Matte screen...the same screen that is on the HEL80.

This screen has been very popular on the HEL80. If you have ordered, or plan to order the Compal IFL90 under any brand, which screen would you prefer.

I have had 8 notebooks with glossy screens and I love them all. The matte screens just seem washed out and are not very good for watching movies on.

this is a real tough one..i could live with either but matte has been generally easier on my eyes.

btw, it seems that the norwegian ones shown in another link have matte screens

Is the glossy screen brighter then the HEL80 screen?

I have not seen them side by side so I could not offer an opinion about any difference in brightness, however I can tell you the Prism technology screen on the HEL80 was well known for its brightness.

I'm none too thrilled about that whole "mirror" effect coming from the glossy, but I can understand why some would like it.

Will those that preordered automatically get the matte screen then? Or will we get a choice between the two?

Everyone will get to choose whether they want to switch to the Matte screen, however those who switch will apparently get theirs first.

Okay thank you. Which do you personally prefer? This will be my first laptop so I'm not quite sure. The glossy seems far better for work in darker areas, but the reflection in the light could sure be a drawback. How bad is the glare in the majority of cases?

I suppose I'll be checking this thread often ;)

Matte all the way. Its much easier to work with in office environments and stuff; glossy screens throw off way too much glare. I love glossy screens too, but given a choice, I would take the matte option.

Your analysis is good in that the Glossy seems to be better in dark lighting while the Matte is better in normal lighting (have you ever tried to watch TV during the day with the window shade up behind you? That is what the Glossy screen tends to be like, and to get rid of the reflection you have to tilt the screen or move to the side).

I do not use my laptop in a dark room, so I personally prefer the Matte.

When we had the PowerPro L 8:15 WSXGA+ Matte screen (Comapal HEL80) and the PowerPro A 2:24 WSXGA+ Glossy screen (ASUS Z96J) offered at the same time, the Matte screen outsold the Glossy by about 9 to 1.

I'll look into it more, but the matte is looking a little bit more appealing. How much is the difference between glossy and matte as far as contrast are concerned? Is the picture quality of glossy that much better?

And, will we be emailed the choice to switch, or how do we go about that?

Although glossy is brighter and tends to show more contrast, I think matte would be easier on my eyes for long periods of time.

So I may actually go with matte if given the option.

I have pre-ordered, and hope to receive notice of these conditions soon. :)

Powernotebooks has been flawless so far, so I expect thew option soon. :)

I doubt the panel will be the same as the Hel80, but to anyone who has seen both of the screens on that one (matte and glossy), were there any noticeable problems with either? Did the anti-glare coating work very well, etc? Like I say, it probably won't be the same, but I thought I'd get an idea off that one.

Ah okay thank you for clearing that up for me.

I've seen a friend's Dell E1505 with the Glossy, and I didn't like it as much as my PC monitor (Viewsonic VX2025WM matte). I also imagine i'll be using this in multiple places since I'll be living on a huge campus next year; and i definitely don't want to be worrying about glare and such.

I'll try to head up to BB and do a side by side comparison (if they have any mattes there... Probably not) tomorrow, and make my decision.

Thanks for the help as always Donald!

At this moment we can't really be sure, but it looks like it will be another 2-3 weeks after the Matte can begin shipping.

Sorry I think I misread a little. So if I ordered with the glossy screen, it will be an extra 2-3 week delay?
I ordered from Xotic the first week of June. I wonder if it is the same case over there. I would really like to have my laptop before school starts end of July. :(

Justin, I ordered a WSXGA ILF90 from xotic and glossy was the only option, so you are saying that it is actually going to be a matte and it will be longer before I can get it?

    If so, how much longer?

Matte has much better color accuracy and doesn't suffer from glare nearly as much. It's the obvious choice in my opinion.

I ordered my IFL90 last night from xotic also and was unaware there was an option for the screen type.
So the glossy screen which I though was the only option is now going to delay the shipment?

I think its a matter of preference, I have a glossy LCD on my desktop and I love the contrast and vibrance, there is no glare factor in most of my house for me to worry about either. I am glad that the Compal is coming with matte for you users that prefer it, but I only want the glossy :(

No, we all pull from the same stock. Sager received and sold a few of the WXGA glossy screens, but has yet to receive any WSXGA+ screens.

At least the first shipment of WSXGA+ screens from Compal will be Matte, and everyone that brands this Compal IFL90 model will be allocated stock from the same shipment, including Sager.

The WXGA and WXGA+ screens will all be Glossy.

So I am confused. My WSXGA screen that I ordered from Xotic said it was glossy. It is actually matte? And it will take less or more time for it to get to me?

We have been recently provided with information that the IFL90 first shipments will be Matte for the WSXGA+. We will be notifying all customers that ordered the WSXGA+.

There was a shortage in the market on Glossy displays so Compal switched to the Matte for the time being.

If any of you who ordered this have questions or concerns please email me.

Ilovelamp, I just emailed you a correction.

The HEL80 matte screen is very nice, but its low brightness annoys me. It is very gentle on the eyes for extended periods of time though. My friend just got the new MacBook Pro with a matte screen and I must say it is orders of magnitude brighter than my HEL80's matte... If that was the kind of screen that the IFL90 would carry, then I would def take matte over glossy again.

Yes, the glossy displays do look "richer", but at the expense of accuracy. You're right, it's a matter of preference, and you have to decide whether you want things on your screen to look good or look real. :p

When do we have to tell you the answer for this? Are you planning to contact those of us that pre-ordered early to give us the choice? I have no idea where on the list I am and how many matte screens you're likely to get, so maybe this is moot anyway.

    Thanks.

We will be contacting everyone to inform them of the issue and give them the choice of which screen they want. We should have enough Matte screens to take care of everyone even if you all want to switch.

    Hey guys,

I'm a newbie here lately pocking my head around the forums. When I heard the news about the whole "matte" or glossy selection that pushed the shipping further, I was rather well... pissed the @#%& off and close to canceling my order and going elsewhere. What the hey, I've waited this long! Good thing the nice people at PowerNotebooks sent me a message. Seeming that this was the best notebook I was going to get for a looong time after leaving my HP dv1000, I'll wait it out.

I remembered what my mom told me, "Good things come for those who wait..." Hopefully it will be and I won't get disappointed...

This is encouraging. It was my understanding that the matte WSXGA+ for the HEL80 became unavailable due to the manufacturer discontinuing the screen itself.

Does that mean they're still going to be making them into the future or are we talking about reserve stock being used up here? I'm hoping for a matte option when I consider a new system next summer (too early to replace my HEL80 which is running just fine for my needs).

I really do like the look of glossy screens however having used both, I prefer matte for the lower eye-strain factor; and reflection (even in the dark) can be distracting.

chrisyano, at this point we simply don't have enough information to know exactly what to expect. It is frustrating...but I guess so is life sometimes.
