I'm interested in buying a Zepto in the next few months, but I was wondering about what would be the best option on the wireless side of things. I have a good idea of what other components I want, but I'm not sure about the wireless option.
I am currently leaning towards the Zepto 300Mbit. However, my main concern is that I'm not certain how reliable it will be and if it is really worth it. In my household we'll soon be getting 100Mbit access and naturally a new router to accommodate the new N standard, so in that sense it could come in handy I believe, but I will still use the notebook in other older spec networks as well.
I do download large files at times, but in the past 54Mbit hasn't really been that much of a problem, or rather, the waiting times have never really annoyed me or anything.
So, I suppose it just comes down to if the Zepto 300Mbit option is reliable and if it's worth it given the information above.
Thanks in advance for any advice or comments.

if your internet is 100Mbps.... then i hate you on principle
but seriously you might as well get the zepto 300 as it will have greater range as well i think and if draft n continues into the future will be more useful in years to come -
if your connecting to the internet at 100Mbit, remember 8 bits = 1 byte, therefore your really connecting at 12.5Mbps
in theory there would be a difference in maximun speed when getting information from the internet as 54mbit is 6.75Mbps max speed and the 300mbit is 37.5Mbps. But in reality doubt very much you will see a difference.
My internet connection is upto 8Mbps, the other day, over my 54mbit zepto i was downloading at an almost constant 820Kb/s . Which in theory is impossible as my max connection speed to my router is 6.75Mbps!
*EDIT*
Looking at the zepto UK site the upgrade from 54mbit to 300mbit is £4.92, which is pocket money, so i'd say go for it especially if the range is increased -
yes it's 100mbit to the internet
Interesting point on the range being larger. The way this house is laid out that could come in handy (the living room area is quite a bit away from where the router is).
I'll go for it, especially as you point out that it's not that big a stretch in terms of money. Thanks again for the advice and comments. -
Anyone got anymore info about this? Any links to comparsions between these to wifi chips. I'm thinking about getting a new zepto when their new line models are released and unless the 300mbit n is performing far worse in some area I'm definitely getting it. How big of difference would one notice in the stronger signals of the draft n?
btw Rich, you got your bits and bytes mixed up, if your inet connection is 8mbit it would theoretically max out at 1024 kilobytes/s (8mbit=1mbyte) which is only a small part of your wireless connection. 54mbit=6.75mbyte=6912kilobyte would be what speed your internet connection theoretically could reach if you had such fast connection so obv thats nothing you need to worry about with your connection but I'd def go with the faster 802.11 n draft. Now I really dont know a lot about this, dont even own a laptop, just thought try to add something to the thread. Mostly looking for some advice myself.
btw I'm jealous of you getting 100mbit at home! -
Humm, i think i read from somewhere that with Santa Rosa there will be an integrated wlan client with N-standard.
So that means when you're about to purchase one of the new models, you have two possibilities:
-Zepto's own N-brand
-Intel's integrated wlan client, probably with b/g/n -

Just a little something I was told.
To work out your max download speed, just divide your expected line speed, e.g. so 6.75 (6750kbps) by 8.
This should be optimal download speed for your connection.
So 843.75kbps is roughly what you should get for a line speed of 6.75mb.
Hope that helps.
Intel 54Mbit or Zepto 300Mbit
