Averatec is a solid brand for the price. Not all of their models are thin and light though. If you have specific questions about one of them, there are several owners here who would be happy to help.

As for others, almsot every brand makes ar least one, it's a huge market.

I've had my averatec 6130hs since September 2004 and it's been very reliable. I've solved the heat issue by putting more memory in it. I'm very pleased with this notebook.

    You could try here, www.averatecforums.com

A lot of manufacturers make thin and light notebooks like Dell, HP and Compaq, Sony, Fujitsu, Gateway to name a few.

    Toshiba Protege R200
    Sony T27TP
    Fujitsu P7010
    SONY T27TP
    Panasonic Let's Note Y4GW8AXR
These are pretty good in light and small. Some of them are pretty good in the battery, like Panasonic and Fuji can run average more than 7 hours........, some of them have very great features, such as bluetooth.....but consider of your usage and MONEY, then you will find Averatec is a great choice.

More memory means that the CPU can cache the data to avoid disk reads so your HD doesn't heat up as much. For example if you have 2 gigs of physical memory windows will more than likely load all of the program like a game into main memory and the HD won't be spinning as much and therefore won't be heating up as much. Moving parts generate more heat then parts that are not moving. I hope this makes sense to everybody.

I can second the More Memory option.

I finally (after owning the notebook for 7 months) installed another gig of ram bringing my total up to 1.25gig and it has helped. While not a massive improvement it is very noticable. The hard drive seems much cooler and things load MUCH faster. If you manage digital photos then a memory upgrade is a MUST.

Gaming has improved slightly. Everyone who has played on my notebook is impressed. I can play just about anything on high detail at 800x600 very nicely.

All this on a stock system with the extra ram.

This may be "taboo" amoung some folks here but I just went up to Fry's (www.outpost.com) and bought a 1 gig stick (crucial) for 159.99. Took 5 minutes to pop it in and be back up and running.

Has the ram actually helped in 3D graphics performance?

Use atleast PC2700 or if it says 3200 then go for the fastest one. If there is only PC2700(more like there is) I think if you put in faster ram the faster stick will decrease it's speed to match the slower stick so you won't have system instability.

I think with 3D graphics it all depends on your graphics card. But since the 9600 is still a pretty good graphics card. I think by adding more memory you can increase the 3D performance settings in games. I've done it on KOTOR II and I've noticed a big differance in 3D Graphics quality.
