Compal hit the wall with technology? :D :D Seriously, I like to see them get stronger in the gaming arena ala Clevo.

i hope so too. i really like compal for their great laptop design. i decided to forget the JHL90 because of its weak graphic card though. i'm looking at ASUS and MSI for 15.4" gaming notebooks but they have the tackiest designs ever! ugly chassis and stupid choice of colors. maybe compal will follow the 9800M GS trend soon. if they do, i am a guaranteed customer

Hell yeah! That is my biggest disappointment with my 2096. It's a GDDR2 9600M GT...come on now you can squeeze AT LEAST a 9700M GTS in there.

Mmmh The most powerful card you can currently fit in a mxm-II slot is the 9650M GT. Just wait until the HD4000 series are out. The 4670 is a monster in the desktop segment and is not power hungry so it should fit nicely in the mxm-II format and should totally crush every nv card under the 9800 or 8800 range.

If there is no real difference in performance why going for more expensive ddr3. Now DDR5 with quad data rate would be nice.

There is no chipset supporting DDR5 memory. It exists only in graphic cards memory(GDDR5). At least to my knowledge.

I'm pretty sure that's what he meant. But as far as I know only the hd4850 and hd4870 use gddr5. So unless compal start churning out really high end machines I don't think that's gonna happen...

If only they were easily obtainable though...it's too hard to find a mobile GPU, and if you do find one they're expensive.

I would absolutely love to just go to newegg and order a mobile GPU lol

But Compal very rarely builds notebooks with ATI so I assumed he didn't mean the GDDR5.
And high end cards would be nice to see in Compal notebooks. I'm guessing they would be cheaper than Clevo for example.

I meant that all of this slightly higher clock and upped timings stopped making any sense and that's when the GDDR5 kicks in. The same goes for the chipsets, thought there is no DDR5 standardized yet.

Well, for a change, I would really like that they (notebook manufacturers) come up with a machine for people who actually *work* with them, instead of catering the rich kid who wants to kill more monsters per second than his friends.

    * Give me a great LED-backlighted screen: I have to look at it 16 hours a day and I don't want to go blind (I'd gladly pay more for a LED screen)
    * Give me a great keyboard (I will by typing on it 16 hours a day): why go with some cheap keyboard that will break in a few months just so they can shave $5 off the price??
    * Give me at least 4 hours of battery in a machine weighing no more than 6.5 pounds. Apple can give me 5 hours! Why can't the other PC manufacturers??
    * Stop it already with those monster GPU's that will eat up all my battery and generate more heat than a nuclear reactor!!
    * Choose good components and good BIOSes, with real support for Linux, from manufacturers who care about standards and quality, instead of hacking together parts from whoever will provide a chip for 4 cents less than the competition. I'm tired of incompatible and buggy BIOSes and webcams without drivers for Linux and manufacturers who couldn't care less!!

But you know what those genius engineers will do? They will think "oh, this type of customer doesn't want a big GPU, so he probably will be OK with a crappy screen and crappy resolution... and since the system won't consume so much power, we can put some crappy battery and give him no more than 2 hours of battery life. That way he won't be typing at the crappy keyboard for so many hours..[etc etc etc]"

In short, you have to choose between an ultra high powered "gamer" machine with grossly disgusting GPU's and short battery, contributing to global warming and weighting a ton, or crappy "business" machines with el-cheapo components, where they tried to cut costs in every corner...

Again, Apple can design a stylish and not-so-heavy machine, with excellent battery life and quite decent power, that is very silent and barely warm and has an excellent screen (although 1440x900 is not enough for 15.4"). Please, ODM's wake up!

(P.S. I see Lenovo is going in the right direction lately, but their machines are still butt-ugly)

The Thinkpads are fine just the way they are. You commend Apple for their consistency in design, surely you can appreciate Lenovo. Anyways, any high-end offering with "business" in the descriptor sounds right up your alley. I hear Dell's claiming 19 hours of battery life on its new Latitudes. They come with LED backlights don't they?

I don't understand why you're posting this on the Compal board as I actually do use my JFL92 for work (I'm at work right now :) ) and it works just fine.
What are the advantages of this? I don't see anything wrong with my current screen, but if the LED one is better, it'll make its way to laptops eventually.
I've had a Toshiba laptop for 3 years, then an HP one for 3.5 years and my current Compal JFL92 for 9 months and none of these laptops ever had the keyboard break (and the laptop doen't sit in one place either -- it gets carried back and forth between work and home every day as well as to conferences and other trips). I don't understand what you have to do to a laptop to break the keyboard in a few months.
The JFL92 more or less does this already. I've never drained the battery fully so I can't tell you whether it can go for more than 4 hours, but I've used it for about 3 and IIRC there was still more than 25% battery left. I think in the future, you will see more machines with hybrid GPUs and the processors continue to get more efficient so you'll get your wish soon enough.
I rather like the mid-range GPUs. They do need to work on the fact that it takes too much power and produces too much heat, but it's nice to be able to play a game or watch a movie every once in a while.
Linux works well enough on the JFL92 (that's what I'm using right now). Hardware support in Linux is not specific to laptops -- it's problematic regardless of what you use.
No, you do not. Again, the Compal **L9* is more or less what you're asking for.
If you want an Apple, buy an Apple.

I was so stuppid not buying the FT00 back in the day :(
