Does anyone know if the Dell Inspiron 1701 was made by Compal?

Hard to say really, Dell usually uses Compal, Wistron, Quanta and ASUS, but as for which for which, it's relatively unknown.

However, Compal has traditionally made the Insiprion notebooks along with Wistron, while Quanta was usually making the latitude line. No idea about ASUS as they only signed a contract with Dell last year to make a few million 13.3"-14.1" unnamed notebook.

Those 'few million' 13.3" were probably the M1330.

Do you have access to the laptop?
Is so the "FCC ID" supposely can be used to determine the original manufacturer. Its located backside/bottomside of the case according to tuxmobil but it might also be on the motherboard.

Find the FCC ID and then use this site.

I doubt it, TBH, it was speculated to be more of a Latitude type notebook, however, who knows. Until the m1330 ships and users get a feel for it(and dissect it), it could be possible.

Interesting, it works for my notebook. It was at the bottom, FC ID: MSQUGPZ5
