Hi, I have been looking for a new laptop and have come across a new processor (not really new) the AMD Athlon 64 processor. Now, it has 64-bit technology. However, I don't fully understand what this means. But, if it is as powerful and feature-rich as AMD says it is I would be excited to use the processor on the upcoming release of Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. But, could someone please tell me what is the story behind the 64-bit technology; and like, the Actius AL27 how does the Athlon 64 (Mobile) run in a 32-bit environment. []

The 64bit processors will run on normal 32bit XP just fine as well as all the current applications, however not much faster if at all than a 32bit processor; but when and I do say when as it might be more than another year before 64 bit XP is released, having a 64bit CPU will speed thing up quite a bit. However to take full advantage of the 64 bit CPU, you need a 64bit OS as well as applications that have been written for the 64bit CPU. Personally I would hold off on getting a 64 bit CPU until the OS is ready, because by then the prices will be cheaper and the CPUs faster.
