I am a very careful person with stuff, honest... (STOP laughing! lol) NO seriously, I am... so, as told in the other topic, I got the Net connection going... and thought everything was gonna be fine...nope... now the thing keeps CRASHING on me every few minutes! I haven't installed or deletedor changed a thing since bringing it home.. just USING it... trying to, anyway... and keep getting this message:

"This system is shutting down." (and advises to save or lose, blah blah blah) "This shutdown was initiated by the NT AUTHORITY SYSTEM. Windows must now restart because the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly."

No error number or anything, and I've never seen or heard of this before.

So with this going on every few (approx 10 minutes or so!), this is NOT my idea of a NEW COMPUTER. sob

Will see if they have more, will try another one. Hope it works, I love the sturdy feeling metal case, the specs are all I need for the purposes I need this notebook for... the size is perfect, the weight, everything...!

So... everybody here who has one already, no problems or glitches at all? Hope not... I really want one!

    Thanks for listening! [ :)]

I usually lurk forums, but now I'm compelled to respond. That's not the laptop's fault. Actually, it seems that the laptop has been infected with the infamous Blaster worm. Use windows update to patch up the security hole, and then look here for details on how to remove it: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.html

If it was a good laptop otherwise, it would be a shame to return it.

Um, you have the msblast worm my friend. First, enable the firewall in Windows XP, then go to symantec.com and download the removal tool. Afterwards, update Windows, as you do not have the latest updates and hence have gotten the worm. Its not the computer's fault. . .they all come like that and if you aren't behind a firewall (either software or hardware) you will get the same thing with any computer you bring home.

newtonium, don't be a lurker if you have answers...there's generally more questions than answers so we need good posts from people such as yourself...oh...and don't be discouraged that you were beaten by 6 minutes on your first post here to the boards [ ;)]

Boo, please disregard my question in your other thread (I asked why it was still going back), I understand now [ ;)]

I'm really sorry about the bum laptop. I have had the worst luck with computers (and all electronics...) so I can understand how maddening it is!! [} :)]

NOOOoooo I won't disable the firewaaalll... LOL

SEE? I am SO shaken up by the worm [ :p] thing I actually read your words incorrectly as "DISable"... funny thing, the human psyche... like the other day another case in point... couldn't find the straws for my sodie at a Carls' Jr the other day... they were directly in front of me, but displayed in a totally different way than usual, so the sought after, altho immediately before me, became cloaked by my pre-programmed mind. [:0]

Gonna see about getting my self a Critial Update after this too... LOL... maybe a quickly downloadable ice cream sammich... !

Sigh... thanks and please don't kick me out of the forum for Idiocy... LOL I'll settle down when all is well with my cute little Averatec [ :)]

OMIGOSH, de blaster vorm?? Dat little ting is qvick, yah?? YAH!! LOL Sure hope it isn't a damaging ting!

Ok, I took it back and they happily replaced it... nobody in there knew what the little notebook was sick with... I even brought pics of the "crash" messages... But anyway, I brought a new one home...

And the first thing I noticed was how much quieter the thing was. Why would that be?? *Everything* seemed to work better on it. Maybe my imagination a little bit. But the first one was noisy from the get go, altho not to an annoying point. But why would the replacement be quieter? LOL

Getting it home, then all I did was... make sure there was a working firewall enabled... thinking that would protect me JUST while I updated the Norton AV stuff and thought it would be safe to check email from 2 trusted friends... NOPE!!

Wasn't long before that same crash message started popping up again. I was terrified LOL LOL. So got on here my other PC, a Dell tower type, ran to you guys and saw that the whole thing is a WORM!!! YIKES!!

Have always been so "up to the minute" with WIndows Updates and NAV Updates etc... first time in all my life to get an "attack"...LOL Kinda SCAAAAARY!!

Thanks to you here, I know what it is! And now can go fix it. So.. thank youuuu.. thankyouverymuuuuuuuch...!!!

Tonight I will go do all you have advised, and hopefully this beautiful little computer will be none worse for my ignorance/IDIOCY.

Disable the XP firewall tho? Ok.. will do that too. But when these 2 computers go on DirectWay Satellite this weekend, shouldn't I use that then for sure, and 24/7? Have never used a firewall until bringing the new Averatec (wow I finally spelled it right, what a dork! LOL) home, and thought, ok. better get used to having it there. Not good maybe? Can I pull some more wisdoms out of you? Pleeaase? LOL

PS to hopeless student: You're in good company..[ :)] Lots of us are humbled by technology and get tripped up by it to the point where we feel almost jinxed...LOL... I have a friend like you... LOL I've just been lucky (knock wood=knock my head)... this here incident was only due to my ignorance and IDIOCY and not the computer... how I lulled myself into thinking that ALL... *ALL*... the Updates shouldn't be IMMEDIATELY installed, I have no idea or excuse. [:0]

[ :)] Thanks to all for your responses and have a nice Monday everyone!

    Hey Boo,

Hoping you can let that little machine have a break from all these accusations of faulty hardware! Keep those nasty blaster worms out as they are mighty enough to render even the most powerful $3000 notebook to a boat anchor of functonality. [8D]

LOL boat anchor lol.. But you are sooo right!!! I was so very naiive to think (actually, I didn't even think at all, it was an incorrect natural assumption
!)that the unit wouldn't need *immediate* visits to the antivirus update sites and the Windows Update site.

Well, I loved my little Averatec so much, it made me want more. So being a Sony nut anyways, I looked over all of theirs and compared them to other Averatecs... considering that I'd like to be able to grow into it instead of feeling outdated too soon for stuff I'd like to be able to do on the PC, I got the Sony GRT 270G. It arrived yesterday, and I've been having fun "moving in".

Do the Averatecs really have metal bodies? Cause I saw a demo one in a local computer store, and excessive "wear marks" showed white plastic under what looks like just a heavy or multi-coat paint job.

    Have a great weekend.......

    Loving Averatec AND Sony,
    Boo
