Hi guys, Hope someone can help me out.
I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to BIOS..

Recently I've been suffering from the Blue Screen Of Death when running some higher demanding programs, cleaned up as much as possible plenty of space and 4GB of RAM available.. so its been suggested to update my BIOS.

I have a Compal JFL92 running on Vista, haven't had much luck finding an update for the BIOS though.

    I'm running on version 1.16 dated 2007

The Compal Driver site seems to be full of broken links.
Found a few drivers on Welcome to Marasst Service but the latest listed for JFL92 is.. 1.6 are the BIOS for IFL90/91 compatible?

any help and advice on this is greatly appreciated :)

    Thanks for the help!

There was a similar post a few days ago.

First, never update BIOS unless you are positive that it is related to your problem.

A blue screen can have thousands of reasons, but a system that worked before but now has BSODs has no BIOS problem, I'd say.

    Check for overheating first.

Get GPUZ, install, activate checkbox log to file (2nd tab, called "Sensors" I think)

Get CoreTemp for logging CPU temps to file. Both programs are freeware, and find it thru google.

Reproduce BSOD and check the log files - let the machine cool of 5 minutes before restarting - I really could imagine you have a heat problem.

What graphic card do you use? 8600M GT?

When you say "demanding programs", you mean CPU and/or GPU demanding? Did you want to say "games" :D.

    Cheers & good luck

    Hey Dr.Colossos,
    Thanks for the reply :)

    yeah games
I’d normally be the first to say Games and Laptops lol.

But I’m only suffering with one game that produces a lot of onscreen rendering. I'm not a big PC gamer but anything I’ve installed before has run fine Modern War so on.

Thanks for the tip with the heat, I've checked all the temps
but theres not that much variety in any of the results.

All results seem to remain the same when idle and when the BSOD shows up.
What is a good temperature for a laptop to run at? and any advice on lowering it?

I've cleaned out the vents.. cleaned the internal cooling fan
I also have extra cooling fans on if i have alot running..

Vista Home - Service Pack 2
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9300 @ 2.50GHz
    Memory: 4094MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT

All drivers are up to date.

    Any suggestions ?
    Thanks Guys! :)

Temps look perfect ... even superb.

Are you sure the temps are not higher when gaming?

Play the game for a bit (at least 30 minutes), and let both programs (GPUZ, CoreTemp) running, and check the log files again, no the current display.

I guess cleaning the vents did not help to avoid the BSOD?

Do you see any artifacts (strange stripes etc.) before the BSOD? Or is it just popping up without any signs/"warning"?

    Cheers

well that's good to hear the temps are running well :)
thanks for recommending the programs, seem like some good tools to have.

got some gaming in but still not really a drastic change in Temperatures..

GPU seemed to only get a MAX of about 74 - 75
    and Core temp registered a High of core#0 61 and Core1# 62

I try to keep the Laptop well cared for, regular cleaning, disk clear up and defrags so on... got to be the first time i've seen the BSOD for a while.

There doesn't seem to be any flickers or abnormal signs or even warning.
    Same place every time though.

Just getting the game to start up, 15 seconds loading then a freeze for approx 1 or 2 seconds.. Bang the ol' Big Blue .

tried taking out the memory and making sure its seated correctly as well..
I'm pretty much out of ideas...

    Thanks again Dr.C!

So it always happens in the same game situation, during the process of/right after loading the game?

    Cheers

It seems to be only affecting me with one game.. and during the process of loading it. Reinstalled the game a few times with no luck..

I really really doubt fiddling with BIOS will improve this.

Check drivers, esp. video - are they the latest?

    Is the game maybe modded?

Is it a "backup-copy" or did you buy it?

Can you get to video settings of the game - turn everything down, and try again.

If you can't access settings at all, because the game crashes even before that, check command line options, most game have some. Maybe you can start it with <nameOfGame>.exe -v 1024x800 or something like that.

Also check google with "BSOD <nameOfGame> loading" - and if some wiseguy tells you to flash BIOS to get rid of it - get rid of him.

    Cheers

Thanks For your help Dr. C,

I'll try messing with it a little more, if all fails I'll just live without playing it...

Will defiantly take your advice on leaving the BIOS alone.

Cheers for the help over the past few days mate :)

Forums just wouldn't work without peeps like you!!!

Thanks, but nevermind. I was helped in this forum, so I just want to give something back.

Another thing that would be worth trying, if you really have the time, is to install a second copy of your operating system, I figure it is Windows Vista or Win7.

You would create a second partition if you don't have one already. There a several ways to do so. If you don't know how to, either check the web or ask here again.

Anyway, reinstall another Windows instance on the second partition (no data will be lost!), and install the basic drivers (Chipset, Video, Audio should do). Reinstall the game and run it.

If it still crashes, I am out of ideas - then you are free to try a BIOS update, but I still think it won't help at all :)

    Cheers & good luck!

i think the game in question is shogun 2 for a guess i have exact same problem loads for 13-14 seconds pauses a few seconds then the blue screen crash

    specs vista 64 bit
    cpu dual core t9500 2 x 2.6
    ram 4gb
and same graphics card as danshin 8600m gt

ive updated all drivers then thought of the bios which led me to this post from google lol as i read it it all seemed very familiar

my guess is its the memory as 64 bit vista hogs alot of it i got it working on the wifes sony vaio which is only (32 bit vista) and as lower base index score on processor (dual core 2x 2.2)and graphics card (9300) than mine the only score the wifes laptop scores higher on is the memory

wish i could get it running on mine as it runs games much better than the sony vaio mentioned above
