Faster CPU is always better, if money is not a problem.

These days CPU's are not used to its fullest capacity, perhaps not even 65%, is all marketing, believe me, the T8300 is fine. Most of the work is in the video card and those GPU's run at 400MHz.

If you want a good gaming experience it's better to have a lot of ram, fast cpu and gpu.

I agree lot of RAM in the mobo and the video card, and a fast GPU will be good for gaming, a CPU of minimum 2GHz it will be just fine.

You are talking only about gaming and even then it depends on the game. For example, Mass Effect loves fast CPUs and uses every bit of my T9300 it can get.

I think as multi-threaded applications become more common, CPU power will become important again (even in graphically intensive applications). Also, once the last generation of P4s and their AMD kin are dead and buried, it will make more sense to use the entire processor rather than a single core like many things currently do.

Good point, thank you for bringing it up. One question though, how do you verify that your game or any application is using how much of the CPU?

I think they are similar in prices, but you also need to consider the customer service and warranty aspect, especially when you laptop fails, these two things are paramount, and I heard that powernotebook is good in these two aspects.

Vista has a tool called Resource Monitor which can run in the background. It tells you what the maximum frequency of your CPU is (the newer ones set this dynamically as needed up to design specs) and also how much of it is being used. It plots a 60 second graph of both so you can ALT-TAB to check up on the application.

There are probably more sophisticated tools you can download, but this gets the job done.

Yeah, I'm aware of that, you can actually do Ctrl+Shift+Esc and select resource monitor. But I'm still not convinced that today's 2.5GHz and higher CPU's are really used effectively.

Yeah but majority of people aren't buying a notebook just for today but for the next 2 or 3 years or even more and we all know how IT is growing rapidly - always. So spending now a little bit more on GHz and L2 Cache - faster CPU, I think is wise.

Laptops are going down in price, once they will become a commodity they will be even cheaper. I bought a powerful laptop 2 years ago for $4k, today I don't think I can even get $500 for it.

It will aways show 100% utilisation but that doesn't really reflect how much of the cpu is used. For benchmarking cpus, specialists usually use the lowest settings and resolution available in games so that the cpu isn't held back by the gpu....

I'm very sure that CPU is not held by the GPU, the GPU is much slower than any good CPU today.

Perhaps... but most likely not by Compal. I don't understand why they're skimping on this (GDDR3 can't be that expensive at this point in time given all of the other laptops using it), but we've had a long discussion on this and it looks like that's what they'll do. Maybe they'll change their tune later.

Maybe it isn't, but Dell and Asus give much $$$ to nVidia to don't allow them ;)

Ahh I hate the port layout on this machine, but that's a good price.

Well the one with the faster processor is better, but I guess the question is do you need it? What kind of task will you be doing? Is it worth the money?
