    Hi,

i have a problem with my laptop overheating, i've tried loads of programs and have it currently on a laptop cooler. But i've noticed that the main fan isn't kicking in that much. If i take it off the cooler it just black screens or restarts. When the fan does kick in the air coming out is not strong if you get me, if i boot into safe mode it kicks out heat and i don't need the laptop cooler.

In my bios all i can do is set a password, and change the startup (i.e. hard drive, dvd drive, usb etc). I would be grateful if anybody can shed any light on this or to help me try programs or mod the bios etc. It's driving me mad!

I have all the latest drivers installed, latest bios (HLB0107).
    Windows 7 64bit,
    4gb ram,
    intel core2 duo cpu p8700 @ 2.53ghz
    Ati mobility radeon hd 4650

Uninstalled the driver for the graphics card in device manager, and didn't scan for hardware changes and the main fan kicked (the air coming out was very strong). So it's the graphics card driver? It's a mobility so it's got "limited support", can anybody help me with this?

I've open it up from the bottom, but i can't see any dust. Checked using a torch. I've googled my board/laptop but i can't find a detailed method for cleaning/dust build up areas. I've checked the fan etc.

You need to remove the fan and check for dust in front of the heat exchanger. Without removing the fan you will not be able to see much dust. Here is a picture indicating the area where dust is most likely to affect the system's cooling ability.

:spinny: There are three causes of laptop overheating: 1. Physical Causes of Laptop Overheating; 2. Software Causes of Laptop Overheating; 3. Design Causes of Laptop Overheating.
You can try to test from these reasons, and have a look latter. :rolleyes2:

I haven't checked it for dust yet, but i will do tomorrow. I'm currently in safe mode and the fan is working cooling the laptop. But when i boot in normal mode it isn't working. Is windows 7 64 bit somehow interfering with the main fan?

I've checked the main fan, i removed it and there was no dust there. I also changed the bios to hlb0100 then to hlb0105 with no change. I read the text file of the hlb0105 and it said that the "fan on full". Also I'm guessing the thin black cable inside with the metal attachment on the end (has sort of a whole going through it) is the temp sensor? Should it have a plastic covering over the top of it? I've left it on for now. Any help will be much appreciated :)

I think i've figured out what it is, windows 64 bit. I've installed ubuntu 32 bit and the fan is coming on to cool the laptop. I have all the latest drivers for the laptop, is it just that windows 64 bit isn't loading the driver for the fan? anybody have an idea?
