Has anyone tried Linux yet. If so, which distro? Any warnings?

i have an averatec 3120v and i've installed mandrake 10 (official) on it and it works good. The only problem i seemed to have was getting my usb mouse to work. (i'm new to linux) but the touchpad on the laptop worked great. I have also booted off the SUSE live cd and that works. I haven't got a wireless pcmcia card to work with linux yet.
-
Nice, I'll have to check them out. How are the S3 drivers? I'm trying to figure out if they can support hdtv resolutions when I connect it to an external monitor.
-
i would think it would work fine. I had my 12.1" display @ 1024x768 and it looked great. (no different than windows) There were couple other oprions i could have picked. I will let you know (just in case you dont know) that mandrake 10 is free from the website but if you wanna use SUSE you have to buy it, the only free version they give out is the SUSE live cd where the OS runs completely off cd.

I got Mandrake installed but since I'm no good with linux I got stuck at a prompt not knowing how to get to a graphical environment. Maybe I'll try botching an install of Fedora Core 2 tomorrow.
-
didn't it ask you during the install what desktop you wanted to use? I'd recomend kde
-
Yeah it did, then I wanted to switch it because I didn't like it. That got me booted to a prompt. So I got Fedora Core 2 installed and it's working very nicely. The only thing I haven't gotten to work are the wireless drivers. They are there with instructions to install but I get hung up on making the rpm. I'll give more details if anyone asks or thinks they can help.

now that suse 9.1 personal is free i have installed it without any problems on my 3120v. Everything worked. Only thing if have to screw with will be my wireless nick card. From what i read 80211b cards are supported alot more than 80211g cards so far.
Does anyone know of a pcmcia card that worked with linux "out of the box"? -
i got my microsoft mn-720 wireless pcmcia card working with the driverloader from www.linuxant.com. works great (suse 9.1 personal)

FYI:
My wife and daughter both have new Averatec 3225HS's. I have installed SuSE 9.1 on both of them and most everything works great. The only things not working yet are the motherboard temperature info and 3D video support. I used the Linuxant WLAN driver to get the internal wireless running.
I have a Sharp AV-18 myself, but I'm really impressed with the Averatec and recommend it to others (especially for linux).

Just installed Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy Badger) on my 3250. It works great.
Notes:
1) Had to manually turn on the wireless--was not autodetected, but no problems turning on from the System/Networking menu.
2) Can't get an extended desktop working. Haven't been able to find any info about anyone who's been able to do this on the S3 Unichrome.
3) Lexmark printer install was a beast, had to apt-get a couple libraries manually. Good basic instructions here though: http://www.aquarionics.com/article/name/Making_the_Lexmark_Z515_work_under_Debian_Linux -
Hi, I'm also a Linux Newbie and I've installed Mandriva Linux 2006 on my Averatec 3200 with a dual boot. Try as I might I cannot get my USB flash drive to work in any way, also none of my other USB hardware works... can anyone please help?
