    Yo Ho me harties

We have been experimenting with different Linux distros on our Averatec 7100 and having a grand Ol time!
But, as will be, we at last GRUBbied our MBR. Hehehehe We can break Windows without even using it
We were going to fix it, only to discover our restore disc in miles away in storage, when we noticed we only used it for 1! - that's one - app.
So we said shiver the timbers let's play with all that space and see whats breakable in there first.

So we want to ask you ALL's what's your experience (s).

Anyone tried 98SE or DOS6x or anything else other than XP and Vista? Any OSX or McApple tests?

Are the dead forums littered with the bones of driverless users?

Has anyone ever gotten their 7100 to dial up with the winmodem/NIC in any Linux distro?

We wish you all happy sailing!

I've been running Linux on my Averatec 1020 since I bought it.

I've just loaded Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex. It looks like it will provide the best Linux experience ever on this notebook. I will describe this in another post.

Windows XP seems less picky than Windows Vista about sharing a hard drive. I've busted Vista installing Linux but with the right technique it can be done safely.

I have no experience OSX. But I think that it uses a different partitioning regime from what all older PC OSes expect. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GUID_Partition_Table

Ok I have successfully installed OSX** on my Averatec 2573/2575. My laptop is divided into 2 partitions, on the 1st partition I have the Stock Windows Vista installed, on the 2nd partition I have the Mac OSX**. I got it to bootup, but it takes approx. 5 minutes to boot up and none of the network items such as wireless is working. So I am working on drivers for those items. God Bless :)

    Argee Argee Argee!
We rebuilt the 7100 today and squeezed the XPHome to 6Gb. We put in a SWAP and EXT3 partitions and a large storage partition and loaded Wolvix Hunter.

This is a SLAX distro that totally rox.
The only glitch so far is some of the games don't seem to like the ATI card.

It's a Ripping good media distro that "just works" so far.

Slomodem and WvDial work great. Still no wireless, anyone tried NDISwrapper?

Ubuntu 710 worx as do Kubuntu, Edubuntu and straight Debian off the Etch.
Knoppix 6, Koscience and DSL all worx.

We are going to try a bunch more and OSX? (not sure what number) since we got an old MAC modem to try.

I run ubuntu 8.04 in a VirtualBox VM hosted on Vista (2371 equivalent). The only issue I have is VirtualBox's video drivers do not support the advanced graphics features like Beryl.

I installed kubuntu 8.10 on my 2575. Wifi working with guide at madberry dot org (I'm not allowed to post url's yet :) )
Webcam works, haven't tried yet the mic or the card reader. Official ATI drivers working, that display is gorgeous. Haven't tried compiz though.
All in all i find it a fine machine, very light, a bit short on the battery life but i snagged it for less than 400 on ebay. So i guess shelling out some 100 bucks more for an extended battery won't hurt that much.
JDELUNA: can't find how to PM you. The dvd you mentioned booted alright, havent tried to install it yet.

For some reason I can't get Ubuntu to install on my 3250hx. I can't even run Ubuntu off the LiveCD directly. It always boots to the "ubuntu@ubuntu:~$" screen.

i'd encourage anyone considering putting linux on one of these boxes to check out fedora 10. it was just released yesterday as stable and a live cd. yay!

i've got it running on a toshiba lappy right now, my averatec is currently on the operating table...but i'm loving 10. 9 didn't work on this laptop, 10 runs beautifully.

Greetings All Thanks for your time.
We have tried a whole stack of Distros now. Does anyone want to know the results?

We have just "procured" OSX - [never thought the MAC would be BACK around here ;)] and we are working on our own 7100 SLAX build to see what all we can screw up. AvereSlax sounds too much like those little chocolate things, gotta find a niffty tag. Any ideas then?

We have bids out on some other laptops and it must be said our 7100 is still a good deal.

Again thank you for your time.
    Good Holidays!
