    Hello,
I am seriously considering and Averatec PC but I am a little nervous about reading the reviews here. Besides the cracking issues are there any other real issues with them? Is the cracking that common?

Let me please tell you my background. I work in support have for 8 years, I have worked in manufacturing with Vaios support on Gateways and family at HP so I know EVERY laptop has its issues. I am not looking for a heavy gaming PC but I do need something that can handle travel and day to day business. I like the cost of the Averatec as our good laptop is now only functioning with the help of tweezers and electrical tape on the power plug. Please let me know what you guys think especially the good because I know that the bad is always louder than the good.
    Thanks

    Lauren

    Hey!

I'll give you my personal opinion of the 6130:

    Pros:
    Supercheap compared to other notebooks
    Good Keyboard
    Relatively good graphics capability
    Blazing P4 speed
    Decent LCD display (good color/brightness)

    Cons
    -Case Cracking
    -Inability to use on lap
    -Over heating issues
-Slow HD (the real bottleneck to this notebook)
    -LOUD FAN
-Heavy (7.7 lbs) and bricklike AC adaptor.. but this is expected, as it is considered a desktop replacement

Verdict: Good notebook if you want just cheap computing, but there are better notebooks out there.

Haven't had too many issues with it. Case cracking, a couple mysterious shutdowns (probably due to heat, but can be fixed by changing thermal paste).

    Happy notebook shopping!

The case cracking really worries me as it will be travelling with me. Heat and loud do not bug me as I was using an IBM Thinkpad 365 from 1996 prior to the one I have at the moment, I used the thing to keep warm when I was in college (no joke).

When you say Slow how slow is slow. I usually run a browser and a Access at the same time. My browser is Firefox so I tend to have multiple windows within the software open at once. Would that be ridiculously slow?

    Thank you a TON!

Well I travel with my 6100 several times a month, it's somewhat a chore to travel with. Combined with the power adaptor/accessories, the whole shebang is almost 10 lbs. The case is flimsy and scratches/chips if you're not careful.

I've noticed the HD being slow only when loading large programs like Premiere/Photoshop/Games. The notebook HD's speed is 5400rpm. I'm planning to get a 7200 rpm HD w/ 8mb cache ASAP.

For your purposes, when the programs/broswer windows already open, don't worry, there's speed and then some.

Overall the notebook is great, but its not the best notebook to travelwith. Maybe the 6200 is better with its magnesium alloy case, but I've never used one.

My friend has an Acer Travelmate notebook equipped with an Centrino (excellent battery life), he's even lightly dropped his notebook accidently a couple times, and the thing is solid (He brings it to school everyday). The thought of dropping my 6100 scares me. [8)]

I think for the money, Averatec makes a great machine, especially the 3000 series.

    True that!

You should check out the model first hand to make sure it is something you would like to work with.

I'd happily show you mine, haha[ :D]

If I had to rebuy my laptop, I would probably have bought the 3000 series, as it offers all the power of the 6100 or 6200 and function (DVD burner etc) but it also is much more portable.
    Happy Shopping!

Thanks for the responses. Yes I know all laptops have their issues as I have worked for a few of the manufacturers. Thanks again

my AV6130HS-20 is great. Got it about 5 months ago, or so. no cracking or whtever, and I'm not inconvenienced by the heat on the left wrist. And you should put the laptop on something when you mess with it anyway. I have a lapboard that works great. It even lets me tilt it for better comfort. I planned to use mine as kinda a desktop replacement anyway. I love mine. Plenty fast, and has been very reliable.

I've had my 6130hs since september and I've had no problems with it. I think it's a pretty notebook for the price.

If portability is one of your concerns, there is no way you are going to beat Averatec without spending significant $$ to do so.

We've bought two now, and the old one is just fine. I've been meaning to get my mom a cheap laptop (She's still trying to use a k6/2 350!!) and my wife wants an upgrade, so we killed two birds with one stone and my mom will end up with a much better laptop than I would have bought her now (sorry mom! :)

Highly recommended. Just don't burn your OS until they release drivers for your model :) Otherwise, excellent.
