A couple of my friends bought MDG notebooks for an excellent value. I was considering a Dell, then switched to Compaq, and now I am looking at MDG notebooks. Any opinions on MDG notebooks? Theres a MDG store in my city so I did have a chance to look at some of them. All i can say is that the build quality of those things are pretty darn good. Very sturdy, very light, and very nice specs also. BUT, I did however, read some very interesting complaints that users have had with MDG Computers. Some of them claimed that only MDG can repair an MDG computer, and that their service is crap. One even suggested that they used only the cheapest parts, whereas MDG claims that they use only name brand parts. But they were complaining about desktops rather than notebooks.
So i dont really know what is up with MDG. GOOD or BAD? Their value attracts me, the fact that they are a private company, and smaller compared to big names makes me uneasy. Seeking some suggestions here.

Come on now, please give your opinions. Anybody? please.....

The only experience I have with MDG is once with their service department and once when purchasing a processor, both instances at the location in Mississauga (Traders Blvd I think, near Matheson & Kennedy), and they do truly stink. Their service dept took over a week to replace a faulty ATX power supply then tried to bill me when it was still under warranty. It also took me over an hour to buy a P3-600 processor - I couldn't get anyone's attention for a good 20 minutes even though there was only 1 other customer besides myself, then they took my money handed me the receipt and I had to wait another 40-50 minutes before someone finally brought my cpu out to me. At the time P3-600 procs were new and they were the only store close by that carried them ($940 ouch!).
I haven't been back since. -
WARNING WARNING WARNING~! DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THIS COMPANY! Here is my story:
I purchased a brand new overpriced laptop form MDG computers 10 monts ago at the Store in Downtown Toronto. Right from the beginning I was skeptical (There was a lady yelling in the store) but I needed the computer for work and they had it in stock.
At first the laptop was crashing on a daily basis. After about 1 week of constant crashing, I decided to check the memory. I pull out the extra 512 sim in my notebook and all of a sudden it works like a charm. No problms... I call MDG and swap my memory at the store. Problem Solved. Was this computer configuration ever tested? Guess not. First Red Flag.
After about 8 months I noticed the power adapter connnection at the back was getting pretty hot. I called MDG support and they told me I would have to drop it off for support. Within 2 weeks I had the machine at the store, I had only used it lightly to back up files and data before warranty repairs. The notebook basicly gets to the point where if you touch the plug you will burn yourself, and I now notice that the plug is actually almost on fire and is clearly burnt.
August 4th - Dropped off laptop for service at MDG
August 17th -Called Store regarding status - Store had no idea where my laptop was and someone was to call me back
August 22nd -Phone Call returned 5 days later to tell me no warranty
August 22nd -Called MDG and was told to write and escalation letter
August 22nd Sent Escalation Email Regarding Laptop
August 28th - Sent second email regarding the status of my computer
August 28th Receive First phone call from MDG regarding my computer and escalation. He basically tells me the same thing I have been told at the store level regardless of my escalation. He tells me to call the store for the status and I refuse. I ask him to call the store and deal with it. I dropped my laptop off for service and I want it back fixed. (half way through this conversation he happens to mention this call is being recorded? Legal? We will see. I request a copy and I am denied as this is property of MDG.)
August 28th - I called the store and was told to again call head office
August 28th - I received an email from head office regarding my escalation telling me to contact the store
August 28th - I phoned the store and told the manager would discuss this with today around 5pm - No phone call received
Date Filed complaint with the BBB.
September 2, 2006 Sent email to [email protected] regarding the status of my laptop.
September 6, 2006 Again contacted [email protected] regarding the status of my laptop. I have still received no phone call from the store.
September 7th,2006 Once again sent email to [email protected] regarding the status of my laptop. I have heard nothing from since I was promised a call back from the manager on the 28th.
Here we are on the 7th. No phone calls, no response to emails. I am about to file a claim in small claims court for the loss of my laptop and/or warranty dispute.
They claim this is physical damage? What a joke. In short I am a computer professional with over 10 years in this business. I have personally owned over 15 laptop computers and dealt with DELL, IBM, COMPAQ and others on BIG corporate purchases for enitre departments. i HAVE NEVER in my LIFE seen a company with so little respect for its customers and product.
Award Winning Support? I think NOT! What a JOKE! -
I took a glance at their site, their notebooks are basically Acers, MSI, and ECS models. ECS does not have a very good reputation for build quality and reliability.

I am very sorry to say that, but that is what I got from MDG !!!!!!!!!!!!
What i can do???? -
I don't have any experiences with MDG laptops but from what I've noticed that when MDG tries to promote itself, they don't last long. For example, MDG used to sell their computers on The Shopping Channel here in Canada, but stopped (probably complaints about the quality of the computer). They used to sell MDG computers at Staples but I've noticed in my city, at least, they took off the MDG banners. My co-worker's boyfriend who works at Staples said that a lot of customers returned the MDG PC's and support wasn't good either.
Also, one of my dad's co-workers bought a MDG PC and it seemed like a good deal because off the free upgrades, but stopped working after 3 1/2 months. Sent it to get repairs 3 times, put it in his basement, and bought a Dell PC and loves it.
I find it funny that MDG advertises itself in its fliers/website as Canada's best selling computer brand.
