What is it like? How does it compare to Asus/Aienware gaming laptops?

Well I would love to compare it to an Asus or an Alienware but I have never owned either so I can't... but its not hard to deduce that the Erazer is a cheap version of those. I will try an break my opinions into pros and cons...

Pros: -CHEAP! If you use this code 826-XY71-SB13-632S you can get 20% off (valid until the 31st of July)
    - Great Specs for the price; its fast!
    - Decent keyboard (although not backlit....); good for typing and gaming.
    - Runs fairly quiet
    - Does not get too hot
    - The trackpad feels comfortable
-The speakers are not amazing but they are quite good considering it's a laptop; 2 speakers plus a subwoofer

Cons: - Cheapish build quality; it's all plastic that has been designed to look like brushed aluminium. However, the plastic does feel quite durable
    - No LED indicating whether CAPSLOCK or NUMLOCK are on/off
    - The screen has a good resolution but the colors are not as vibrant as they could be. In particular black areas may appear like a really dark gray
    - Optimus switchable graphic technology not available

I have not done any intense gaming yet but I did run some benchmarks:

    Spec: i7 2630
    8gb RAM
    460M GTX
    750gb (7200RPM)
    Screen 1920x1080

    3d Mark 06 (free version) = 14060
    3d Mark 11 (free version) = 1995

I've been using this for over a week now and I'm very happy with this laptop and I doubt that it will cause me any problems.

I hope this helps, if you need anything else let me know.

I just tried the code and it works fine... which country are you buying from, perhaps the voucher is only valid for the UK. If you google "medion voucher codes" you will get lots of websites providing you with discount vouchers. Not all of them work and some may be expired but if you look through a few pages of your google search you might just find something.

Did just that and found another one for 20%, saved £220.

    Thanks for all the info.

Just out of interest how long did it take to arrive and was there any way to track the order?

It took exactly 7 days for me; shipped from Germany to the UK. I called Medion a few days after placing my order and they gave me a tracking number. They used DPD so I could track the whole process on the DPD website.

Yes, had one for about three weeks now and am just amazed how fast it is (this is the one with an 80Gb SSD and 4Gb of RAM).

My other laptop is a year-old Asus G73JH - the bees knees then, with an i7 -720QM and HD5870 GPU (and it's still a powerful machine) but this Medion leaves it way behind.

I'm a Flight Simmer and am constantly amazed at the fps I'm getting from FSX with nearly all the settings at max, and with complicated add-ons, VFR photo scenery, etc. Nothing seems to faze it, even heavy/lousy weather (which always slowed up my other machines) doesn't affect it at all.

I'm beginning to wonder if my older machine is set up right, 'cos I just can't believe the quantum leap in performance that I'm getting from the Erazer.

The only downside, and it's not really a problem, is that less than half of the SSD is used for the 'C' boot drive - i.e. 33.4Gb (the other half is 'Recovery'), which doesn't leave a lot of space for other programs, Documents and stuff, but with a bit of housekeeping (and removing the nearly 9Gb of Office Starter 2010!) there is now plenty of room.

And I love the way it boots to a useable desktop in less than 30 seconds!

You should get a 2nd hard drive.

Medion is not a brand or manufacturer, they are a rebrander. Your laptop is actually an MSI gt683.

Hope you didn't spend to much on it, because you can buy them barebones with GPU in the USA for about 700$.

And, to answer your question, no your other machine is not set up right. The 460m is the card in your MSI/Medion, and the 5870 is a little faster.
Its likely the SSD and the CPU that is faster on the Medion.

That said there are a few things that are faster about the 460m like dealing with very large textures, this is only because of the extra 512mb vRAM.

In the end, the 460m is a little newer, and obviously so is the laptop, not to mention being a much more awesome brand and model than the g73.
BUT the key point here, try some overclocking on the 460m. That is what will really make your purchase worthwhile, because otherwise there is no reason to have these 2 laptops at least in my mind.
The 460m overclocks like a beast!

If I were you I would have waited to get a new laptop, and done a little more research. Shortly after they released the model with the 460m, they released them with the 560m for pretty much the same price. The 560m is just an overclocked 460m, so the real model I'd wait for? ;) the gt780 with 570m.
That card is very very powerful by comparison...
But if you like 15", there was no other way. :)

Many thanks for the advice and I'm quite sure you're right in all respects, however, perhaps I should've explained that I'm UK based, and things are a little slower around here!
For reasons too complicated to go into, I needed a 15" machine, like...now, and the only MSI laptop available here was the 680 - the 683 won't be around 'til later in the year, and as for UK pricing - well, let's just say it doesn't seem to bear much relation to reality...
So in the UK this Medion was (and probably still is - I did do my homework) the best value gaming laptop around, but yes, as you say, if you can wait awhile, the 683 has got to be better.
You'll have to forgive my naivety - you can see I'm a newbie to the forum, but I was so blown away by this machine that I felt I had to respond to the original post!
If they come up with a 17+ incher, I'll buy it tomorrow!

    Hi,

Indeed the overclocking with this GTX460m especially in the Medion X6813 is quite massive : check my sig and I only got up to 71 degrees at maximum after few hours of COD MW2 while the CPU is only up to 70 too.

I can only recommend this X6813, I perform 14750 under 3Dmark 2006 with my config so cant be happier

Now plan to upgrade the CPU !

    cheers

ps: Guys have you tried to o/c your GTX460m in your Medion Erazer? How much do you get to ?
