This new laptop just popped up in a local store here in Tokyo. It is made by MSI and was presented at Computex 2004. See the pic on Hardwarezone.com here: <url>http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?cid=18&id=1139&pg=7</url>
Also see the MSI homepage with detailed info here:
    <url>http://www.msi.com.tw/html/products/nb/nb_htm/1003.htm</url>

The spec I can get at my local store is the following:

    Pentium M (Dothan)1.8Ghz Centrino
    1024MB DDR-SDRAM
    60GB Hitachi Travelstar HD (7200rpm)
    ATI MR9700 (128MB)
    DVD+RW combo drive
    15"SXGA screen (1400x1050)
    weight 2.9kg (6.3 lbs)
Price: JPY 209.000 (roughly 1900 USD)

MSI claims that this laptop's battery can keep it running for 7 hours on light applications.

If you check out the MSI link and take the short flash 3D tour you soon realize that this laptop is drool materail with a magnesium alloy chassis and that cool blue led light.

    Downside is the high price.

    What do you think?

Since this is MSI's first forray into the laptop industry I guess its better to wait for some tests before buying. But I am really tempted this time!

I think the price is good considering what you get.

If this is a good brand with high quality products and good support, then this sounds like a good deal.

That seven hours of battery life certainly surprised me. Even if they exagerated, it must be able to get a "good" five hours.

So 2.9kg is about 6.5 pounds I think. Thats still pretty good considering how full of features the machine is.

That would be nice to talk to someone who has tried it out and get their opinion on it.

I agree that 7 hours battery life is just for sensational advertising purposes and you are probably right that the real time would be between 4 to 5 hours.

I have used MSI products in the past for desktop PC's, notably a mobo and a video card, both served me well. I also appreciated MSI's frequent driver and utility updates from their 'global' website. I took a quick look earlier and saw that they already have all the drivers up for this laptop.

I found this brief lab test from Australian PC Authority:

I'm hoping major review sites like THG or Anandtech etc will review this little beauty.

If I do go ahead and buy it expect a review and many pics later!

Quote from review about battery life:

"Ran the battery down as much as I could, was over 5 hours when I finally quit - specs say 6-7 hours."
