I am strongly considering purchasing an MX, but I was wondering about its keyboard quality. I was looking at my local Frys electronics at a Fujuitsu S6231 and a Sony VAIO, and was comparing those keyboards to a Thinkpad. I found that the Fujitsu keyboard seemed very bad, with non durable keys that seemed liable to pop off, and a keyboard pad that flexed when pushed with any force. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Thinkpad keyboard was flawless, with a deep keystroke and sturdy base. The VAIO keyboard was in between, but perfectly acceptable. Where would the MX keyboard rank amongst these?

i've used the keyboards on my P1 MX, my mom's fujitsu (s6210, not the s6231 that you saw, but i think they use the same keyboard), and my coworker's IBM thinkpad T40.
In terms of ranking the keyboards, i'd have to rank them in the following order, based on what i experienced in terms of durability, sense of sturdiness, and keyboard flex: IBM 1st, MX 2nd, Fujitsu 3rd.
I felt that the keys on the S6210 were a bit too "clicky". the Thinkpad keyboard felt rock solid and extremely sturdy, with the MX a close 2nd.
Personally, i think keyboard "feel" is a personal preference, based on how an individual wants the keyboard to "react" while typing. My girlfriend actually likes the keyboard on her 600m better than my MX, which i think is just ridiculous. That aside, however, while i feel the IBM is tops in terms of durability and keyboard flex, i ENJOY typing on the MX more. hope this makes sense.
just let me know if you have any other questions. You really can't go wrong with the MX[]

The MX keyboard has been very solid for me. It is responsive and feels very durable.

I recently purchased the MX and it is the most complete system I have ever used. I've used Fujitsu, Toshiba, IBM, and Sony and the keyboard on the MX is a close 2nd to my most recent IBM T42p.

Hi jenevynne, it's great to see that there are more and more MX users out there! it really is a "complete system". everyone i show my MX to is VERY impressed with the looks and feel. [8D]

I just got an MX yesterday and like everyone else here think it's a great machine. But I am having a problem with it that is making me want to return it.
It has to do with the keyboard-mouse setup. The problem is that the mouse is flush with the wrist-pad and the keyboard is a bit lower down. As a reult, unless I arch my hands, I keep brishiing the mousepad with my thumbs and this results in the cursor moving around erratically while i am typing. The result is that I find myself constantly needing to correct typing erros. I will be typing on one line and then I find that letters being input have jumped a line or two or more up into the middle of some other sentence. The fact that I am not a touch typist may be contributing to this.
Tried reducing mouse sensitivity and slowwing down click speed. Also tried propping up the notebook so that I could get to the keyboard from an angle, but no matter what I do, the problem persists.
I'd appreciate feedback on whether this has been an issue for others

Hey hlemel,
for the majority of the time, i use an external mouse and simply disable the touchpad. When i don't use the external mouse and am forced to use the touchpad, i sometimes experience the difficulties you describe. On my dell 600m and old Fujitsu N5010, i experienced the same problems, though, which is probably due to the fact that i have rather large hands.
Basically, it's been a factor with any laptop i've owned or used, so it's never really affected my purchasing decision.
Good luck with your MX![]

Hi Michael
I'm also a large hand/big finger person... I have been fiddling with mouse settings and this seems to have helped quite a bit, although I will probably try seeing how things are just using an external mouse. On the Compaqs I have owned, the touchpad is depressed just enough so that my thumbs don't make contact with the mouse when I am doing my hunt and peck typing.
Other than this issue the keyboard is really great as is everything else about the machine.
Just another thing. Although the screen is bright and clear, I am wondering if you or others feel that there is a slightly bluish tinge on white backgrounds.
Basically I want to keep this machine and will try to get the fokls at P1 to agree to a 2 week trial period to see if I can get comfortable with it.

Talked to Ivan at P1. What a great set of people to do business with!
No problem with giving me the chance to try getting perfectly comfortable with the MX.
I am feeling that the more I use it the more I like it..

hlemel,
actually, after reading your last post, i looked at my dell 600m and notice that the touchpad is a bit recessed as you described.
personally, i've never noticed a bluish tinge on white backgrounds on my unit.
couldn't agree with you more regarding Ivan and P1 in general. He's always taken good care of me. I've referred numerous friends to Ivan, and he has never disappointed.
glad to see you're beginning to like the MX more and more. hopefully you'll end up keeping it!
