I´m probably buying a 6625 from Zepto and want some advice on which memory to chose.
my alternatives are:
2x1024 667mhz
2x1024 800mhz
1x2048 800mhz
I don´t want to spend ALOT of extra money just for a 1% upgrade so I want some advice on which of these memory modules I really have the use for. I will mostly use my laptop for gaming and movie-watching.
What will the performance differance be between these models. I´m going for the 2.2 ghz CPU.
-
667 and 800mhz wont have much differance. I just found out that the zepto website says that the 800mhz rams run at 667mhz but the timing is better then the normal 667mhz.
The 1x2Gb will be slower then the others because it wont run in dual channel. But it can be upgraded later without having to remove any of the old sticks.
The 2x1GB 667mhz is the most cost effective solution. -
Thanks for the reply...
Is the Zepto even able to run in dual channel? (I´m not a computer techno)
Why do the 800mzh ones run in 667? the computer can handle 800 bus speed right? -
I contacted Zepto about the 800 vs 667 RAM modules... excactly because their website stated that.
I got the answer that the new models support the 800MHz RAM fully, and that the limited support for 800MHz RAM was only for old models. -
so would I gain performance even if i exchanged 2x1024 (667) for 1x2048 (800)?
-
No body really knows because no one has seen or tested a laptop with 800mhz ram. There is a review but there is no comment about the RAM performance. No info on the timing....
A CPUz screenshot of the laptop running with 800mhz would already help. I wouldnt trust what Zepto told you on the phone. It seems like the sales reps dont really know too.
Intel website says it doesnt work at 800, Zepto website says it doesnt work at 800. You get the info when clicking on the ram while configuring the 6625. So it makes sense that it applies to the 6625. Forum posts from Zepto people and phone calls say it does work at full speed. Not really good info.
Why they offer the 800mhz Ram under the 6124 (with a C2D at 667mhz!) config I really dont understand! -
I have stated this else where in these forums please take note:
The santa Rose Core 2 Duo does not support DDR800mhz nor will there be any significant benefit of running DDR800 at 667mhz over standed DDR667.
All chipsets for Core 2 Duos do however support dual channel memory which will give you a signifcant perfarmance increase over single channel.
Dual channel memory quite litterally gives you double the memory bandwidth over single channel, not every task on a computer will benefit from dual channel but most tasks will.
You can expect approximately 50% on average memory performance boost which i think you will agree is signifact.
In order to run memory in dual channel you need either 2, 4 or 6 identical memory sticks, same speed, size, timming and chip layout etc. -
Yes we know that. But Zepto is telling us something different. That is the whole problem....
-
I dont know what the problem is, it seems pretty obvious to me.
Zepto were also offering DDR800 with the previous series of laptops which also, obviously doesn’t support DDR800 either.
I Trust INTEL:
http://www.intel.com/products/centrino/compare.htm
See for yourself, Santa Rosa are the ones with 800FSB -
Yes I know....
Intel made the chip. Zepto or atleast their manufactuer made the Bios. Maybe they tweaked it. It wouldnt be the first time that someone has done more with an Intel chip then Intel expected or tested. We just dont know.
Many people including me have said what you said for weeks now. But we have yet to get a 100% answer from anyone. -
In fact Intel dont make any mobile CPUs that support DDR800
Also Crucial (the biggest memory manufacturer in the world) dont even make DDR800 for laptops what does that tell you. -
Well we do know because Zepto admit the memory runs at 667,
If it runs at 667 then it runs at 667. -
Like Tsal and I posted above there is mixed information. Not only here but also at zeptoforum.com. And even if it runs at 667 mhz there is still the question of improved memory timing.
-
Improved timing could boost performance a little but you know it will prob be less than 1%, and anyway you can by 667mhz memory with improved timing designed for this chipset, I am not sure what the DDR800 is designed for, nothing uses it yet.
Memory timings are specified in Case Latency like this: CL5-5-5-15. They are more useful for matching up sticks for dual channel mode. This website explains:
http://www.dewassoc.com/performance/memory/cas_latency.htm
Ebuyer stock a whole bunch of memory sticks with specified timings here:
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/sear...ntCatID=152&intSubcatUID=2063&bolShowAll=true
Notice how they don’t stock a single stick of DDR800 for notebooks.
When I get my 6224W in 20 something days time I will benchmark it with both and I expect they will be exactly the same. -
I just asked skynetwork (the guy who wrote the german review) for CPUz Screenshots and 3dMark06 results at 1280x800 resolution. He said the laptop has already been return to Zepto
It would have helped alot of arguments. -
Be sure to post your findings here
-
Just for the record, the 6224W does not have the option of DDR667 when configuring it, if it did I would buy it with 2GB of DDR667 but i am unfortunately being forced to buy it with 2GB DDR800.
Come on Zepto why know memory options for the 6224W -
Yeah I saw that at the German shop too. It was there a few days ago... Now removed Sucks. It cant be out of stock because it is listed as availalbe for the 6124.
You think it is ok to buy 1gb at 800mhz and then another 1gb 667mhz after? It wont run in dual channel then right? But even if I buy 2x1gb 667mhz after it is cheaper then upgradeing to 2gb 800mhz at Zepto.
The 800mhz should get me a good price on ebay hopefully... Since it is so super dupa special.... -
yeah why is it that the 6214 can still be bought with the DDR667 ram as below:
130121 2048MB (2x1024) DDR2 667/PC5300 SODIMM, Zepto
but no choice for 6224. I wonder what sort of price increase this is causing, i really want 2GB but dont want to pay the extra cash for no real performance gain.
the danish reivew of the 6625 on this site used DDR667 aswell, if there was a performance hike with the DDR800 wouldnt you want reviewers to get their hands on this model. Moon Angel could confirm some stuff for us when she gets her prototype for reivew aswell. -
The differance due to non option of 667mhz ram is 48€ extra for German shop!
The UK is even more crazy... The option moving from 1024GB DDR2 800mhz to 2GB DDR2 800mhz for the 6124W costs £53 (£31 more then 2gb 667mhz ram) and the same option costs £100 for the 6224W/6625WD....
Also seperatly 2x1GB 800mhz DDR2 costs £100 total! So if you want 2GB buy the laptop with 1GB and order 2x1GB seperate! Same price! Gets you 1Gb extra. Ofcourse you cant use it but still you get it!
Come on Zepto! Its all the same RAM! -

MIXING MEMORY MODULES
To answer Wav'es question earlier, if you try to mix memory modules of different sizes then you will get single channel,
mixing modules of different speeds shouldnt make any difference unless the design or timing/latency of the memory is different (both will run at the slowest speed).
Mixing memory modules that have different timing/latency or a different design (different chips on different sides of the stick) even if they are the same speeds, you will get dual channel but with eratic behaviour, similiar to that of faulty memory or incompatibility.
It may be possible to use different memory modules and set the memory to single channel in the BIOS to over come the compatibility issue but then you will have half the memory bandwidth.
Because its so difficult to be sure that memory modules will be compatible (unless exactly the same) i would avoid putting diffewrent types in altogether, eratic behaviour could consist of crashing, constnat restarting, failure to boot, blue screen erros and even Data curruption when writting to hard disk.
If you know how Raid 0 works then dual channel is very similiar except incompatibilities in dual channel are much worse.
I dont want to be rude about Zepto as a company as they dont seem half bad, and if the 6224W does what i it sais on the tin then it will be the most Awesome laptop out there, but i think they have mistakenly purchased a load of DDR800 and are having problems selling it, this would explain why its not an option for what is probably, currently their best selling laptop. -
The 667mhz memory is not again available at the German store. Good value for money. Upgrading from 1GB to 2x1GB only costs 30€.
-
667 Ram is now available on the value option on uk site
-
Thats nice. Any chance one of the Zepto guys could post a CPUz screenshot of the 800mhz RAM? Maybe some memory benchmarks? Is there any info what the timing of the 800mhz RAM is? Wondering if it might be worth it.

none yet. I am thinking about a lot of them but I am not in a hurry. Can wait till August. I have a T60 with a x1400 so till the new games come out I am fine with that. I am currently looking at 4 laptops. The LG R500 and Samsung X65 with a GS. Their design is the nicest I think and I dont really need a max of power. The Zepto 6224W is also interesting. It is the best value for money but I am a bit worried about the battery life. The last one if the Asus F8s. But hardly anything is know about it still. Seems to have a ATI HD 2600.
