Hi all, I ordered a AV1050 with 1 GB. The default has 512mb.

Now my supllier is saying that is is hard to install the extra memory because the whole computer needs to be opened.

Is this true? is it complicated?

Or maybe he is just trying to get away with it.

    Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately I think your supplier is for the most part correct. The 1050s are ODM'd by MSI I believe and you have to take apart the whole case (all the screws, keyboard, casing, etc) to get at the innards. The MSI built 2100 series is the same way unfortunately.

It's not exactly complicated (if you have a service manual), but it is time consuming. I'm guessing he's probably never done it before, but by my guess it would probably take 1-2 hrs to disassemble and put it back together which in his case is time lost doing other work just for the sale of some ram which in the business world isn't probably worth it for him :err:

it is cumbersome to replace the memory in a 1050, you do have to remove the entire bottom panel, but that's all. but once you've done it, you can do it in under a half hour. there was a disassembly manual on averatecforums.com, but unfortunately that site is still down. :(

Just to let you know, I am really impressed with the AV1050.

It´s a very good looking machine, the screen is crisp and bright, and XP performance is more than acceptable, even with 512MB.

Good to hear phil...I've had no complaints with my 2260. The only real problems with Averatecs in general is their customer service and warranty repair work. It's not that they won't fix it...just that it can take weeks or even months to get it back (as I have personally experienced). Otherwise, they're generally well built and reasonably well equipped for the price. Most Averatecs are ODM'd by MSI and Twinhead.

I am really satisfied with my 1050. I have 2 gigs installed and have a 7200 rpm hard drive installed. As a result, I find it quite acceptable and cannot justify upgrading to another machine at this time. If you have a CompUSA, they will install memory for a flat fee and their techs can do it in an hour or so. Also, there are directions and pictures available for the do-it-yourselfers. I have the zipped file on how to do this. Lots of screws and a little trick around the DVD bezel and carrage.

Two gigs is probably overkill but you will see a difference with having a gig of ram. I've had my 1050 since they came out a little over two years ago and I am still quite happy with it.

    Jim,

Could you provide the zipped file to me? I need to replace a fan in a 1020.

    Thanks.

    Hi All.

Is it possible please also to get the zipped file from one of you to enable me to dismantle my 1050.

The Averatec forum site is still down with a message of "as soon as we can do a restore we'll be back up.

    [email protected]

    Thanks

The following link shows how to get into the notebook and is the same as the zip'd files. The memory is standard notebook memory, DDR 333MHz, PC2700 SO-DIMM. I have Kingston sticks but it seems generic sticks work as well. It comes with 2, 256k sticks but later models may have one 512 stick. I recommend a minimum 1 gig memory and while open and memory is cheap, 2, 1 gig sticks. Here's the link:
