I have an Averatec 3270. Sometimes the monitor back lights just go off for no apparent reason. It happens most often just as Windows XP gets full booted, but it has happened after fully booting while I was working on a document. I can tell it's just the light going out because I can see a faint outline of Windows on the monitor screen. Sometimes rebooting fixes the problem and sometimes I have to wait a while. Sometimes this does not happen at all.

Is it possible there is a lose connection somewhere? When it happens, I have tried exercising the monitor hinge back and forth, but this does no good. I have never gotten the lamps to come back on once they go out without a reboot.

    Any suggestions is appreciated.

Hmm... do you think this is a problem with Windows or your computer?

Perhaps try getting into the BIOS and just leave it on for a while (overnight?) and see if the backlight turns off there, too. If you're sure it's a hardware problem feel free to ignore me :)

That was one of the more common problems with the 3200 series. And the cause would either be a flaky inverter or connections to or from the inverter or even the backlight itself.

Eliminate the connections issue by removing the plastic around the lcd - only four screws in the corners (covered by rubber plugs) - and examining the wire harness to and from the inverter.
