    Hi Ohlip,
I have several Motorola ML-850's. Unfortunately, I have the same problem.

I can find absolutely no technical information or parts specs. ...well, I did find a $195 power supply, but no info about hard drives/caddys or anything else.

If I didn't have several here, I would say they never existed.

    Best,
    Mark

Hi! finally I've got a mate with this unit.
Well! with regards to power supply, thats is not a big problem we can mod....any compatible adapter that are available as long as with the same output power. All I wanna know if there is available service manual with schematic diag. on the market.

My unit has no harddrive caddy and cable ribbon. We just need a cable ribbon for the harddrive it doesn't matter if there is no caddy maybe a can of sardine will gonna work on it :D . BTW, I bought a harddrive cable ribbon that came from compaq 1200z and its on its way. I will post back if it is compatible.

Do you have any idea where to find a battery for the unit either dead or used? Also we can rebuilt the dead one, you know.

I guess nobody are interested on this unit. Anyway to those with ML 850. First, I modded the dc jack connector by replacing it with the one used by sony and panasonic. Second I used the compaq AC adaptor with almost the same voltage and current output then by changing its plug that correspond to the dc jack and it works perfectly. By now, my unit is working and I can access to the bios. By using the external cdrom I can play with UBUNTU OS. Now, is to hunt down the harrdrive connector.

BTW, this unit is some kind of distress its like been from a war zone but still working hard.

Ok! here how this animal to disassemble: At the buttom, release the lock of a battery compartment by sliding the release nob backward then take out the cover and the battery. Under the battery there are two screws unscrew it all the way. Then unscrew all the srews that you have seen at the buttom. total of ten including the 2 at the battery compartment. Afterthat release all the rubber port at all side coz that rubber cover is part of the buttom cover. Then slowly fry it up the buttom cover, start at front side cover and you set to go. Slowy open it coz the speaker wire is connected to that cover. Good luck.

BTW, can you tel me where to get a harddrive cable ribbon for this unit? I don't have a haddrive caddy and connector. Connector for the harddrive is good enough for me. I am still hunting.

Purchased 1 of the Getac W130 of ebay and also in need of parts ,
battery, hdd connector, battery cover .Awsome laptop runs ubuntu
great also need some advise on power connector mod I messed around
and broke the plastic from the middle of the connector the outside dia
of the connector is 5.5mm and the inner is NOT 2.5mm and the plastic
inside the power plug must have been brittle so now i have a short
can someone help in determining the polarity on the power so i can maybe
solder on a pigtail or replace my connector on mb and if anyone has found
a ide for the mb ,also would hooking a 8 16 or 32 usb stick internally
be an option last time i tried the usb route i never could load a bootable
xp pro and get it to work any other ideas welcome for future mods

Ok! 5 person now who own the ML850 and W130.

BookMo...You may use the dc jack that is use for panasonic toughbook or sony notebook . It has the same leg or pin for the Mbo. I already modded mine coz the existing one has small jack and you can find that easy. I also have the same unit and i can't find any hdd cable ribbon so far but if somebody can provide us an schematic of the IDE pinout on Mbo. it is more lot easy.

Yay lol i removed the HD!!! so happy... powerjack broke for me aswell, and (for reasons unknown) whenever my new hd is in, my speaker stops working. But when i place my old 60gb (came stock) it starts to work??? But if you need any Ml850 drivers ask me! espicially the modem drivers. The new drivers released by M$ don't work worth a SH*T

Replacing the DC jack is not as hard if you have a bet of skill on electornics soldering. I have done that to my unit as I mentioned from my previous post coz the original one is a bet smaller and I am having dificulty on finding the right adaptor and plug fo it. I replaced the dc jack the uses by panasonic tougbook with the same leg and pin for as much as 5buck. I am now using the adaptor from compaq a compatible one and I replaced also its plug that correspond to the panasonic dc jack.

BTW, can post the pin detail of the mbo. IDE or even the photo of the harddrive connector. Thanks

Woot..woot I've got the caddy and connector. Now here is what I found out. The motorola ML850, Getac W130 and Mitac W130 are the same. the only difference is the LID logo. Now I need an schematic to install a gps module into this rig internally. Does anyone of you hiding this document? Let me know. The only alternative that I am thinking is to use one USB port at the back of the unit and it will not be usable externally but if i can get the shematic. It is more easy without sacrificing the USB port. Anybody!

unfortunately, no, i dont have any exploded charts on any of those, but i do have these (Unfortunatlely the .pdf is too big(so was the .txt as well)) http://forum.notebookreview.com/images/smilies/frown.gif:(

You could always call uup Motorola and get them to send you guys parts, I know I can send back my other ML850 to motorola and they'll refurbish for a somewhat decent price... (I'm swapping all the parts around, long story)

Okay, email me for the ML850's user manual @ [email protected]

I just want the pin out of the two expansion slot connector inside to verify If I can install or embed bluetooth or gps as to what I've done to panasonic cf-29 and cf-18 toughbook.

If you could find a wrapping tool, the one that the tech use on tel. termination(old style termination), You can use the harddrive connector from panasonic Cf-48 by terminating the other end of it to the MBO. terminal. I just used that temporarily during the time I am hunting the oem hdd caddy for this rig and it works but its a pain in the as...on terminating the cable individually.

Ohlip, i see that you have a backlit version aswell, well, as unfortunate as it is I'm selling my ML850 up on E-bay, also I'm selling my vehicle mount, then later a 850 for parts and repair (its REALLY F*****d up) and finally my car adapter for it sometime. Also, I need to know if a W130 will work in a motorola mount, i dont know if you could test this, but i need an answer. Also, I didnt see anything about gps in that pic you uploaded..

Hi all - and thanks in advance for your assistance.

I know this has been covered before but can't find the resolution.

I recently acquired a working ML900 sans HD and HD caddy. Of course every parts unit on Ebay and elsewhere is also missing the same parts, as most of these were LE or municipally owned and to trade they pulled the HDD WITH the caddy and threw them all in the dumpster.

Any help on locating a caddy or a flex cable/connector would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Specs can be found here:
    http://www.motorola.com/staticfiles...ments/staticFiles/ML850_specs.pdf?localeId=33

You won't need drivers for replacing the ram and hard drive.

Although it doesn't mention what type of hard drive it uses, I would assume the ML850 uses the older 2.5" IDE interface hard drives.

    Guys,

I can help with the HDD cable, I've got 4 of these machines, they are pretty good, but my problem is the BATTERIES, USD140 for one!

Do you know where I can get some for a reasonable price?

    Kawasaki KLR?

$140 sounds reasonable, I recently bought 10 for $195 each, but at least they were fresh 7800mAh from Motorola. Consoling myself. :)

On a side note, I also had success putting 1GB SO-DIMMs in them, Patriot PSD1G33316S to be exact, PC 2700, 2.5v.
