I have a 15 month old Compaq NC8000 and over the last 2/3 months vertical lines have started to appear across the screen. It started with one, then seems to be increasing. At moment, I have 7 vertical lines. Any ideas?

It could be your GPU. Give your tech support a call as this should be covered by your warranty.

I second that. Might be heat or mechanical damage to the LCD or display cable as well. Check with Compaq, hopefully it's still under warranty.

I had a few of those on one of my old laptops, you could get rid of it by "twisting" the LCD a tiny bit.. I eventually opened the lid and put little plastic things between the inner lid and the LCD to always "push" at the right spots.. Screen has been perfect for the last 2 years =P
I dont recommend doing what I did on such a new system, mine is pretty old, and I've got a lot of experience repairing notebooks. (You can dmg your system if you tear the thin film cables or scratch the back of an exposed LCD.
Anyways, that problem is generally associated to a damaged LCD, caused by slight bends from pressure on the notebook, maybe from a backback or improper case.
