Hey everyone. I e-mailed Averatec the other day, and they e-mailed back. They didn't really answer all of my questions, but told me when they would be answered. this is the original e-mail:
Good afternoon,
I was wondering when the 4000 series will be released in May: do you have any particular date in mind? I noticed that they are already out in other parts in the world. As far as I can tell, the two models are different in terms of processor (and chipset/motherboard).
Which one do you recommend for someone who wants the best computer he can find? And which is the battery life greater on?
Also, do either have PCI-Express card slots? It is my understanding that the centrino sonoma have slots on the motherboard, but the specs are pcmcia slots and not PCI-E card slots. Why is this?
Lastly, I live in Canada. Which stores will the 4000 series be retailing in? And what price point should I be expecting?
Thank you in advance,
***** *****
this is the reply they sent:
Thank you for contacting Averatec.
The 4000 series laptops will not be available until the end of this month. The price and specs will be posted on, or around, the 15th of this month. Future Shop, Business Depot and our website will be offering this model.

WOOP!
the 15th should be a great day for many of us. I expect we should get spec for the 1000 series as well.

I've fallen in love with a latop... so what???

Anyone else having trouble with the averatec website today? 'Cuz I am.
I suppose they're making the changes...

The 4000 Centrino model is already available in the US for $999. I forgot which store but it was in the flyers today.
EDIT - I saw it in the Staples Anniversary sale flyer. Its $999 after rebates and has:
13.3" Widescreen glossy screen
1.6 GHz, 533 FSB Dothan
80 GB HD (probably 4200rpm)
512 MB Ram
Dual Layer DVD burner -
its too bad staples doesn't have one for display at their stores. i stopped by and they don't any floor models as of yet.
any info on the 1000 (10") model? and how much it may cost?
-
Yep, I went there today just to check it out in person as well. It was a disappointment but hopefully they will be on the floor soon.
-
there's a model in the allston store in MA. looks pretty nice and got some interesting features, i'll probably buy it later this week. for those curious folk, i can give a brief description from what i remember--blue case, white keyboard, usb ports all over the place (seems to be one or two on each side). no latch on the lid, nice bright screen. wifi toggle switch on front of keyboard, quick button to activate windows media player and a battery saver button on keyboard. power bar is pretty small, seemed to be manufactured by lite-on. it would come with a 6-cell battery, which was 1440 mAh (i believe). vent is on the right side of keyboard towards back. it's possible to upgrade either memory slot too (from what i read on the installed manual). ~4.7 lbs including battery.

they STIL haven't posted anything on it...
has anyone seen the 4100?
I suddenly switched over to it, deciding that it's the better choice as long as the new ati chipset... IMO it's more future-proof than the centrino and you can underclock/undervolt it to acheive the same battery life. Plus it has a higher fsb...
I've fallen in love with a latop... so what??? -
It has integrated SIS chipset, not ATI if I remember correctly.
-
well i did a little research and the SiS seems like a very good chipset as well. But we still haven't recieved some real info from averatec, so i e-mailed them:
Hello,
I am slightly anxious at not having recieved news for the 4000 series yet.
I was told info would be released on the 15th, but i see no info.
When will info be released, and why do some places already carry the laptop in the US?
Thank you,
******* ******
Hopefully the wil respond quickly so that i can post it here. It's great that some places have it, but why don't others? -
I've got a response, and from what i gather, we should get the info and laptops at the same time.
Here's the e-mail:
Thank you for contacting Averatec.
The 4265EH series laptop is currently only available at Staples. Circuit City and our website will have other versions of the 4000 available soon. Detailed spec sheets and other information will be up on our website soon.

Can't wait to get my hands on it! -
Staples at US is now selling the Averatec 4255 (P-M 1.6GHz) for $999 + TAX ($1199 - $100 (instant) - $100 (mail in)). The build quality is really good.
I am waiting for the Averatec 4155 of AMD Turion 64; its list price is about $100 less than the above 4255 model with better 64 bit processor and supposedly better processing speed.
I can't wait to see a full comparison review of these two models : 4255 vs 4155 - the best systems to compare head to head between Pentium M (sonoma) and Turion64. The two models have exactly the same DDR RAM, 80GB HD and built by the same company, the ultimate speed difference can be easily controlled by the CPUs and the chipsets. Also, the two CPUs in 4255 and 4155 are clocked at 1.6GHz. -
I just purchased the Averatec 4265 and have been pleased with it so far (just few hours playing with it), but just now I read the user manual and it says the battery is only good for 300 charges. I'm a student so I use and charge my laptop everyday. So in 300 days I'll have to buy a new battery for this laptop and the warranty only covers the batter for 6 months(180 days). I called Averatec's customer service and they confirmed this. I'm returning mine tomorrow. I'm not going to buy a new battery every year. That's ridiculous.
