Hi earlier we had a bad storm go through, i unplugged my laptop from the back and was ready to shut it off and stuff. But then somewhere near our house lightning struck and my laptop turned off.

Now when i try to get on the internet there is no LED PC/Activity Light on. I tried using the USB Cable for my Motorola SurfBoard modem and it works perfectly. The NIC and USB Port are right beside each other and my USB works. I am wondering if there was a surge through the modem, through the ethernet cable to my laptop?

I am still under warranty but i don't know if it will cover it...

Since you are asking us the question, then you don't know what really happened, so don't work against yourself, just bring it in for repair, and tell them that it just stopped working.

The only part that's broken is the NIC, no further hardware failure.

Basically, it snap in in one of the internal PCI ports in the board, internally.

But one more time, bring the issue to your vendor, just tell them that the card is not working anymore.

You are assuming that lighting broke it, but it could be completely something else and unrelated. I actually think is totally unrelated because other components would have also gotten broken with the lightning.

Anyway, is your call, warranties are there to be used when you still have it, after that retailers won't help you at all, trust me ;)

I also had my speakers plugged in and my sound card didn't fry...

How can i test the port? When i plug in my ethernet cable i get nothing in my network places...The usb right beside it works perfectly...

I can't bring it to the vendor, since i am on vacation in europe, so i have to wait 2 months...

If all else fails, you can buy a PCMCIA LAN card on eBay for less than $10.00. Enter # 290226641667 in a search box on eBay to see what I'm talking about. I thought I had a bad LAN on a HEL81, so I bought the card, but it ended up being a bad router port.
