Never have I heard of this before with any electronic but vizio wants to be the first. Well some of you may have bought your vizio pc used or from smaller sellers off ebay or amazon. Guess what you have no warranty according to vizio unless it came from certain retailers and you have proof of purchase.
Jacob: Thank you for contacting VIZIO Live Chat, the home of Entertainment Freedom for All. This is Jacob in South Dakota. Have you ever contacted us before?
Michael: all the time
Michael:
tell me when my warranty ends
Michael:
VIZTSXXXXXXXXXXX
Jacob: Thank you. When did you purchase your PC?
Michael : I don't know
Michael : I bought it today
Michael : from a guy on the corner
Michael : who also bought it from another guy on the corner
Jacob: It was purchased from a private seller there would be no warranty on it.
Michael : Dude are you insane
Michael : how can something that has a year warranty not have a warranty because it changed owners
Jacob: It was sold from our retail stores it would be 1 or 2 years warranty depending on the store.
Michael : Well at some point I'm sure it was sold from a store how else did they get the computer did they steal it from china
Michael : I mean if I say it from vizio.com does it automatically get a two year warranty
Michael : Are we using the honor system here????
Jacob: Is there an issue with your PC?
Michael : no but there is an issue with you not answering my question
Michael : when does my warranty end please
Jacob: If you purchased it from a private party there is no warranty. If you pruchased from a retail store and have proof of purchase there is 1 or 2 years warranty depending on the store it was purchased from.
Michael : so if I bought from a seller off amazon I have no warranty
Jacob: Do you know the seller from amazon?
Michael : yeah it's a guy he is a private seller
Michael : Your either lying to me or vizio is insane I have never heard of this from any other company
Michael : I would like to call in and speak to a manager
Jacob: I can have a manager call you within the next hour if you would like?
Michael : yes thank would be fine
Jacob: Okay, I will have one contact you. Is there anything else that I can assist you with today?

I hate to tell you but this is kind of normal. I went looking at warranties and every one I looked at says it is warranted to the ORIGINAL PURCHASER from an AUTHORIZED SALES OUTLET.
The ONLY one I know of that doesn't work that way is apple which lets you transfer ownership on their extended warranties when you sell the computer.
Here are a couple excerpts!
VIZIO
VIZIO provides a warranty to the original purchaser of a new Product against defects in materials and workmanship for a period of one year of non-commercial usage and ninety (90) days of commercial use.
SAMSUNG
This Samsung branded Computer product, as supplied and distributed by Samsung Electronics America, Inc. ("Samsung") and delivered new, in the original carton to the original end-user purchaser ("you" or "purchaser"), is warranted by Samsung against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship. Please note that some states do not allow time limitations on implied warranties.
This limited warranty begins on the original date of purchase and continues through the Limited Warranty Period and is valid only on Samsung products purchased from Samsung or a Samsung authorized reseller and used in the fifty (50) United States and the District of Columbia (unless you enter into a separate written agreement with Samsung).
I've always looked at buying used or "on the street corner" as I'm saving money but taking my chances. You don't know the condition of the product, there is no warranty from the manufacturer or the seller and you really don't even know if its a legit sale or stolen. Still sometimes the price is good enough to take that chance. -
Many electronics manufacturers do this. I think Sigma does this on their lenses.

pretty sure the same goes for all manufacturers--and not just consumer electronics manufacturers. (if what alchemist says about apple is true, then they definitely have to okay the transfer first and/or inspect the device.) is that conversation for real?

That's not the case with Sony (or atleast 3 years ago) I had bought a used laptop who's motherboard blew off and Sony replaced it for free and then on another laptop that I got refurb they replaced the headhpone jack (they sent a tech at home). As long as you have a receipt (even a paypal one) they are ok. They even send me Windows 7 Upgrade dvds based on paypal receipt

From my experience apple, dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Sony does not do this. All I have to do is give them a serial number.
I mean I have never heard of a product that just came out lose a warranty because it transferred hands. So if you don't have proof of purchase you are also screwed.

It was a private sale on the laptop with motherboard blown off. I did not do any transfer of warrant in any case. Also the seller who sold the refurb, I am not sure if he is an authorized dealer. Sony goes by the serial number, if there is manuf. warranty left over on that number then you are good.

In case of Vizio if you bought it from them or a major store, you should be good. Any big retailer might be able to reprint the receipt I think.
-
This is fairly standard practice. Most products have a non-transferable warranty, cars being the only major exception.
-
Apple only does it on their applecare extended warranties. The warranty transfers with ownership (ie: tied to serial number) but those plans usually cost a couple hundred at the time of purchase to get. -
I'm surprised I'm the first one to mention this, but why were you so rude to the Vizio rep? I feel no sympathy for you.

NO WARRANTY - Thanks VIZIO
