My new laptop would arrive in a week or so. I am planning to buy it without a pre-installed OS but i have an Xp Sp2. Can some one enlist how to proceeded in steps. Also is it really worth it to buy a Vista (which version?).
    Here are the specs:
    15.4 WSXGA
    T810
    2GB ram
    250GB HHD
    8600GT 512 GDDR2
FPR, BT, WLan, mic & camera.
    Thanks in advance :)

I would say yes, XP is fading away and so the many applications for it. Vista has so many nice features, media center, improved security, nice desktop, etc. The question is; which vista? It comes in many flavours and it will depend on your laptop useage.

Not business for sure. I also don't need a work station but a simple back up every now & then is a must. If good looks comes on the expense of wasted ram then no :(

Vista does need lot of RAM, so it's no wasted, I suggest you get Vista, is certainly a better OS.

Guys...This thread is not about which OS is more popular. Lets say i give Vista ultimate a try. It should be a clean install copy; right?
How will i partition HDD & install drivers. Is there any thing i should download before hand?
I am aware of the Vista tweaks but i have to reach there first.

Nope, XP needs that, but not Vista, you just install it and Vista take care of the rest, even in that respect Vista is better than XP.

Not it is not worth it to buy Vista if you already XP. After 3 months on vista ultimate I'm back to Xp. And well it just works whereas Vista was giving me problems in some apps but I have nothing against it.

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64Bits UK version and I am getting more power out this then with Windows XP Pro version.
Also i like the new setup for VIsta and the design for Hardware is supported so far without any patch, XP needs update's for say the C2D and maybe the new Montevina chipset will need a fix, like SP3.

Steam crashing, outlook crashing, and general feeling of "this isn't a snappy as xp or linux", and quite crappy network performance even with sp1... That and the almost 2 minute wait between loading bar to a fully operational system... And I got a bsod recently... I'll give vista another go when I'm done building my desktop.

Save your money and stick with your XP. XP's support has been extended yet again (because the new EEE PC's are now coming pre-installed with XP), and Windows 7 is coming out soon. Maybe when Vista goes down in price, I'd say go for it but until then just save your money, you already have XP.
