How does Averatec do it? Any other manufacturer would charge at least $1500 for the same equipment!
Does anyone own one of these systems? If so, how are they? Do they do too much skimping to keep the price down? Or is this a situation where "It's about time!"
Let me know...this might become another bible for the Reverend to read through at this price (even though I don't know how the misses will take it!).

I don't think they skimp on anything. It's similar to how eMachines gets their loaded systems for approx the same price.
I personally haven't seem much advertising of the Averatec line. Maybe the money saved on advertising, while still being able to get their product into the market, allows them to sell notebooks without making a 300% profit margin and still make a decent profit. I think I read/heard somewhere that HP spends $30 million (or was that $300 million) a year on advertising alone with their "HP Invent" slogan. You have to makeup this money somehow, usually by sticking it to the customer.
The same goes for the Acer brand. Good quality, excellent features and an amazingly low price. I'm confident that these manufacturers are stealing market share away from the larger brands.

Staples has the 6128 pretty cheap right now. I'm of the mind that Averatec offers the best value in mobile computing right now with this line.

I still prefer Athlon 64s, but, for the price, this machine is unbeatable.

They just got the 6130 hs in at Futureshop here in Canada. I'm seriously thinking of getting it. It won't be mobile so battery life is not a problem.

Rtms,
If you're not looking for a DVD Burner, you may want to consider the 6130H from Staples.ca. They're offering this unit for $1599.85 - $100 mail-in-rebate - $20 using Coupon Code 80375 (online only) = $1479.85 (approx, before taxes).

Hey all, first post.
I did a lot of research and reviewing of various notebooks in $1000-$1500 range. I spent weeks comparing and making spreadsheets, looking at speed, size, burners, etc.
For me the 6130HS was the best price for the money. I picked up at Sam's Club for $1250 two weeks ago, and have put plenty of hours on it so far. Start up and overall set up was great, and it picked up my wireless instantly.
It's very fast, has yet to lock up and the widescreen is great.
I've uploaded lots of video from an analog camera, dv camera, and my dv cable box, as well as burning cds and dvds..with no issues.
Upgrading to XP pro was also a peace of cake.
Yes, the battery life leaves a bit to be desired, but this is a desktop repalcement for home so it's no big deal. The speed, power and overall ease of use is well worth it.
My only peave not having a separate standalong button for volume, instead of using fn and keys. -

Good summary of the machine, but I still stick by my m6809/6811 as the best buck for buck.
Still, that price is too good to be true....
