I'm wondering what's involved in replacing my CPU with another one, perhaps a Mobile one. It's been a while since I've done chip swaps (the last one was a 387 upgrade), so I'm not sure what I should be looking for.
Anyone have any pointers or insight?

It is possible, others have removed the chips and put arctic silver under them for heat issues. The only prob with a mobile chip maybe to find speed stepping software for it as the Bios doesnt support AFAIK. I read tho that software such as that has been developed. Not sure where to look. Coboc .com may give you answers, they sell barebones for this type computer. I may replace my processor next year if I still have it; Graphics takes a lot of speed; looking to get a 3.4 or 3.6 as the price comes down.

Thanks!
I'll take a gander around and post what I find. I've already done the arctic silver, but I'm still fighting heat.

I've tried replacing the 3.0ghz inside the 6130 with a mobile p4 3.06ghz, it worked, but it would freeze instantanly when switching on battery power (the bios couldn't support speedstep.)
Unless you can find a special bios for it, I suggest you get another notebook if battery life is a concern. -
Hey the bios of the sister Uniwill notebook may work, tho people here stated that it will not support the monitor resolutions. However some programs such as Powerstrip or the modded ATI drivers from Omegadrivers.com may fix up the graphics part of the bios. Unfortunately you need a copy of the original bios just in case it doesnt work. Of coure I dont know that the uniwill bios supports speedstep either.

I flashed my 6130 with an Uniwill bios, but the video didn't work out too well with resolutions up to 640x480 ... If we could figure this one out ...

1: did the uniwill bios support speedstep?
2: if speedstep not necessary maybe utility, freeware to do the same?
3: where do we get a copy of the old bios if problems? I have flashed my asus bios but they give a utility to do it.
4: what to gain besides speedstep, and rid the logo screen and beeps at startup? any other gripes? -
Hey just a suggestion:
Don't mess around with the Uniwill bios unless you have a backup of your current one. I've tried messing around with the Uniwill and Averatec bioses in bios modding utilities and I couldn't get anywhere. Mind you I'm not THAT technical, though I can manage to figure it out. I did find you could extract and replace the image of the white Averatec screen, which is cool. You can put any picture you want so long as it's a certain format and size. I haven't actually flashed the bios for fear that I could mess up my computer permanently, but in theory it's possible.
I went thru the whole Uniwill bios flashing thing and luckily my friend has the exact same laptop because I was able to backup his bios and flash it back onto mine.
As for the speedstep, somehow I don't think the Uniwill bioses will support it since the uniwill versions didn't come with mobile cpu's as far as I know. I could be wrong though, so you should reference the specs on their website.
Cheers,
