There's a new bios for the HGL30 posted on the Compal site ( http://www.compal.com/asp/driver_dnd/e_download.asp?M_Path=/Download/NB/HGL30_31/BIOS)
but the .zip files are password protected. I was wondering if anyone knows the password. Thanks.

Bizcom apparently just pulls theirs straight off the Compal site. Their copy also has a password. This is really weird and really annoying.
-
Maybe try and get you hands on a zip file password cracker if worst comes to worst, would take a long time if it was a tough password but
-
Maybe Donald can check into this for you guys?
-
Seems like the bios adds vista compatibility.
-
Well some new Vista capability anyways. I didn't realize there was a problem with the HGL-30 and Vista. I really don't understand this as the HEL-80 BIOS with the same new functionality was released without a password.
-
Thanks for the responses everyone. This really does seem odd since every other HGL30 bios released by Compal didn't have any password protection. Hopefully someone figures out the password or Compal posts the bios again without password protection.
-
Yeah this is odd, I'm anxeious to get this bios to see if it helps my WoW problems as mentioned in this thread.
Ran a password cracker for about 10 mins, and gave up...I figure I can just wait for it to be released, there is some reason it's p/w protected, I might as well respect that. -

Title is WoW Problems? a few threads down. Got a generic reply from blizz, but I'm gonna call and trouble shoot with them when I get the time. -
So now Bizcom's zip has the password removed, but the checksum doesn't pass.
-
I installed the new bios but it kinda messed up my laptop. The back light on the screen turns off when it reaches the windows login. I need to hook it up to my monitor for me to use it. I will try to switch back to 111A now.
I was able to get it back to 111A and its fine now. I think I'm gonna give 112 another shot.
Tried 112A one more time and same problem... Maybe this bios is for vista only? I'm still using XP. -
Is there a point in upgrading the bios if everything is working fine? I think mine has 109 on it.
-
In general, I would say there's no need to upgrade unless there's a fix or added feature that you like from the new version.
I'm still running 101B on my HEL80--no problems and no intention of updating until something really wows me. -
-
-
Sorry about that. No problem with the checksum. I was confused. Anyways, after using the /x switch with phlash16, I was able to flash with 112A. No problems so far. Not even the screen brightness mentioned and I'm still running Windows XP.
-
I've flashed 112A as well. No problems either, so far. I'm running Win XP too.
-
So how exactly would I go about upgrading the BIOS?
(step by step please, I'm usually not a dummy with these things, but I don't wanna take any chances as I know screwing up the BIOS is very very bad.) -
Basically follow the instructions here http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=83939
Which in a nutshell are:
1) Create a bootable USB key or CD with the necessary files to flash the bios (PHLASH16.EXE, GL30112A.WPH, HGL30112A.bat, for bios 112A for example)
2) Boot your laptop with the USB key or CD and run the .bat file from the command prompt -
OH MY GOD!!
That was the scariest thing ever, holy ****!
I made a bootable USB, put the 112A bios files on there, ran the .BAT file from DOS.
Everything seemed like it was goin fine, the progress bar was fillin up, the checkmarks appearing, etc.
Then, at what looked like 3/4s of the way through the checkmarks (for erasing/programming or whatever), the thing just COMPLETELY SHUT OFF, with no warning whatsoever; I really don't think it was done. So then I died a little inside.
I turned it on and...
A black screen.
No hard drive activity, the light on my mouse didnt light up, etc.
So then I almost cried.
So I shut it off again. Then turned it on and..
It worked; the bios said 112A, and it started up fine.
Man what a relief.
I have no idea what happened, but I'm pretty sure it didn't finish flashing the entire thing, cause the fan seems to be acting the same way still (the main reason why I wanted to upgrade the BIOS in the first place)... Is that even possible? to have like half one version half another?.. anyway, I'm not about to try re-flashing anytime soon.
I hope it didn't screw anything up... -
-
After my HGL30 finishes flashing a new bios it always immediately shuts off like what happened to you, but once I turn it back on it always starts up properly. However, I have noticed that with bios 112A that when I boot up sometimes the HGL30 will do a restart after a couple of seconds from being turned on. But when it boots again it's fine.
I'm sure your HGL30 finished flashing 112A otherwise I doubt it would start at all. I was also hoping that the 112A bios would have a new thermal policy to keep the fan spinning at a low RPM and ramp up from there as required instead of the constant starting and stopping of the fan which I find quiet annoying. -
Oh good. there should really be a warning or something when it finishes >_<
I thought it wasn't done all the way, cause every time the progress bar fills up, it adds like another column of numbers, getting closer to the right edge of the screen; I figured it was supposed to go all the way to the edge of the screen before it was finished. But I guess it went fine then (except not booting up properly the first time after)
Edit: I thought the fan thing was supposed to be fixed already in the last few bios (i only had like 103)
I guess it's not.. Or was it even worse in the older ones? O well. -
It is an exceptionally scary flash process the first time you do it. Phoenix really should change that.
-
It seems like theres another new version out, 024A
has anyone tried it yet? -
I installed the 024A version. Seems to work ok.
-
I've flashed to 024A as well and everything is fine.
