Got the MX on Saturday.
After serious mix ups in ordering, the P1 guys were extremely fast in getting the order out on time. Kudos.
As for the computer, it is the one based off the Asus W3V
The specs are:
Portable One MX
2.0 ghz, 1GB RAM @533, 60GB 7200 RPM HD, 8x Dual Layer DVDRW, 14.1" WXGA Crystal View (glossy) screen, ATI X600.
I just installed Microsoft Office XP, but otherwise, that's it.
Oh, and for reference, I'm a grad/law student and spend well over 6 hours a day with this laptop. Lots of typing, reading, emailing, DVD burning, MP3 playing, occasional photo editing, graphics work and gaming.
Quick Thoughts:
- Speed: haven't run benchmarks, but this ***** is fast.
- Screen: this was a big concern for me. I was very afraid
regarding the move from a 15" matte to this screen, and
was particularly concerned with eye-strain, as it was an issue for me on the Dell 700M.
In the end, it was not an issue. The screen is beautiful, and I use it for long periods without worry. I've compared it to new Apples, Dells, Toshibas, and it's the nicest I've seen, other than the Fujitsu, and better than the Sonys (subjectively, of course).
Unfortunately, screen real-estate is an issue. Can't quite get two full windows side by side with the XGA resolution.
Heat: Another major concern. No need. This baby is not hot AT ALL with battery power, and only warm with ac power. Still cooler than Apples and Dells I've used. And, I've compared it to a W3V, and the cooling add-ons do seem to work on the P1.
Noise: Not a big deal. The HD is not bad at all, especially for a unit this fast, and the DVD player is medium in volume (but top of the line).
Sound: great on line out (though headphone jack is messed up). Speakers are ok. As for sound quality, better than Dell Latitudes, but worse than an Apple powerbook I compared it to. Could go slightly louder, but it's fine for normal use. I saw some dude write that the speakers weren't loud enough for use on the airplane. Who the hell listens to music out loud on a plane?
Keyboard: beauty, other than the function switch. Great feel. Different than IBMs, but just as nice. A little crisper, I'd say.
Weight: not quite an ultra-light, but plenty fine if you're not an 80 pound kid.
Battery: about 4 hours. yeah! what? ok.
Other pros: comes witha great bag, nice software, and looks sweeeeeet. Kids in class love it. A girl with a new ibook couldn't believe how nice the screen looked.
Cons: the headphone jack is messed up, and wil probably need warranty work. it works, but must be plugged in in a very particular way, or will lose sound. Boourns
Overall, I'd say it's a keeper, and will win out over a T42. The screen issue is the only holdup, as I'm a chronic multitasker and would love more room to work.
conichiwa, *****es.
I'm out.
