I currently somehow fixed the problem using the 2.2.6.0 (has problems before with the same version) I'll wait for more inputs before updating, no point if I update to get *more* problems :D

I'm working fine with the new drivers, there is some funky stuff with the raconfig, but its still fine for me. No dropping. I would suggest just install over the current drivers, i think that will leave the least chance for problems. Is there such a thing as WPA 2 and WPA-SPK 2? b/c i have that choice for security now with the new config.

Ya know, I didn't have any problems with the stock drivers, till I went to the RALINK website and downloaded (not installed) the update. SO installed the update and smooth sailing for a few weeks, NO PROBLEMS!! Then this thread about the new drivers comes out and BANG! dropped connections all the time. Installed the newest drivers again and back to smooth sailing. Seems weird. This happen to anyone else?

That is weird, I didnt have any problems. The last version I was having problems staying connected(ie. Getting dropped every 10 mins or so) at teh university network, but at home I was fine. This version I did a full uninstall of the old drivers and installed the new ones. Now it works perfectly, I dont get dropped at school anymore, and I can still connect fine at home.

Uniwill released three new bios for their laps, none for averatec (as far as I know, the 258-sa0 and the 6130 is the same laptop ...)

after messing around with the new and old drivers, i'm having the same issue adidas is having.

everything was working fine (if its not broke, dont fix it), but after a upgrade OR uninstall/reinsatll-upgrade..the connection is crap. Dropped connection, wont allow continous visiting of any site, wont recognize all available networks.

Went back to the prior version driver, and alls okay.

    hmmmmm....

As for the BIOS, maybe ishould start a new post for that....

I wouldn't try updating the averatec bios with a uniwill update unless u are absolutely sure its the right one. There was a post a while back, which someone that worked at staples tried a uniwill bios update on the 6100 and it messed up. Luckily he had a backup. U can read the thread here, its near the bottom.

One thing about these Ra-Link drivers that I have noticed is that you have to disable the setting in windows that says, "Let windows manage my network connections" or something like that. Then the Ralink controller on your systray will manage your wireless connections. Once I did that, I had no problems at all. Before I did that I was having problems even with the new drivers.

Yeah that was me. I was trying to point out that the manufacturer released a bios for their laptops, which is basically the same if you compare it to the averatec. The BIOS didn't quite work out well, but for the most part, it worked. There was an issue with the video card, so I guess it would be no big deal for averatec to make an effort and use this updated bios for their own machine.

    Single Coil

That's right!! now that u mention it, I forgot that I did that also. For some reason the new drivers werent working well with the windows wireless config utility, so i disabled it and now i'm working off of the RAlink utility. The only thing I dont like about this utility is that I have to activate which w-network I want rather then letting me prioritize which w-network i prefer and it automatically connecting it.

Does this apply to the av5500?

I just got one, and it keeps dropping my wireless connection. This was after Windows update installed a 2.2.8 driver? I rolled it back to 2.2.6, the problem was still there.

    Thanks,

    Matt [8D]

Are you talking about the RAlink driver working for your laptop or the RAlink utility in general? If ur laptop uses the ralink chipset, i'd suggest updating the driver and using the RAlink utility. I find that the utility is a much better in keeping a connection then the windows one.

Anyone running WPA-PSK with this driver??

I'm trying to use it with my AV5500. I see the wireless router in the site survey, reported as WPA-PSK authentication, TKIP encryption. But if I click on it, no option to connect or add to profile.

Trying to add a profile manually, WPA is not an option in the dropdown menu.

    Thanks!

    Matt

I haven;t used those drivers but I just wanted to know if they work better than the ones that came with the Av5500. I still have those and although I haven't used WiFi yet, I plan to soon. Should I get those or stick to the ones I already have?

I dont know if it is the same card or not for the 5500, but really you should try the current stuff you have. The config provided with the newest drivers is much better then Wireless zero config that windows includes though. Updated drivers also usually will perform better as well.

This queston is to "singlecoil" and "tranh2". I was looking at your posts about disabling the "let windows manage my network connections". I think this might help me, but I could not find that selection. does that only come up when you initially install a network driver, or can you still change it? I looked really hard, and I can't find that setting. Please be specific. Thanks, Rex.

Ok, once again I found the answer after I asked the question. That selection is not available until you install another configuration utility, such as the ralink drivers. I wanted to find that selection first, but that wouldn't be possible. I had that driver on my 6130hs before, but I uninstalled them when I started having connection problems again. At that time I didn't know that selection was possible, or beneficial. Thanks, Rex.
