I have the laptop to the left, a Compaq EVO N180. The unit does not power on. When the Adapter is inserted in the unit, it the lights come on like its charging the battery but once you hit the power button the lights shut off and you have to unplug it and replug it back in to get the lights again. It does the same even with the battery removed. What is wrong and how do I fix it?

I moved this to this forum only because you may get more viewers of Compaq machines that may see the message. Typically in Hardware are the "What should I get" posts.

It sounds to me like a short circuit somewhere. Obviously the machine is registering the ac plug and you hitting the power button, it's once you hit the button where the 'disconnect' is occuring.

So even if the battery is out and the ac adaptor is in, you still get a charging light but unable to power on? This makes it sounds like a short circuit somewhere.

Is it possible for you to charge the battery in another machine or borrow the same type of battery (charged of course) and try to power it on with just battery power?

Do you have a reset button on the bottom of your machine? If so, I would try hitting the reset button once you plug the ac adaptor in and after you hit the power button.

I'd also try another AC adaptor, like a universal one, just to eliminate the problem isn't in your adaptor.

I know none of this addresses your issues directly, but some things I would try myself before stepping it up a level and reaching out to Compaq.
