    Hey there,

Just wanted to know the timeline (or rough estimate thereof) for the different mobile graphics processors. I'm just wondering when I can expect a DX10 Compal 8600go laptop in the near future.

Thanks for any of your input!

There haven't been any announcements yet, but Nvidia is reportedly testing mobile DX10 cards right now. They will likely release high-end GPUs first though--so you may be waiting a while.

Many believe DX10 GPUs will break out for notebooks in the near future, coinciding with Vista's release. But as I said, there are no confirmed reports of any of this yet as far as I know.

They already missed the holiday season, which means you shouldn't expect anything from them this year, and since they dont have a chance to get stuff out this year, you can bet they are using this extra time to test and possibly push the limit even more for the release. I'd say going off a typical hardware cycle, you wont see anything until the summer from either ATI or NVidia.. Thats the next chance to get "the big bucks" from the market since the younger audience that tends to what that kind of stuff will be out of school and working, or out of a college term and working more... Those kind of cards dont tend to get released in spring or fall because there isn't much market outside of corporate, and the bulk of companies that buy laptops dont use those sort of cards, they are using low-end or integrated.

nVIDIA reports that they won't have a laptop version of the 8xxx series until 3rd QTR next year, and it will be scaled down from the desktop version. The desktop version just takes way too much power...even for a desktop :)

Thanks for the information, Donald. There's a lot of speculation going on in the gaming forum. This will come in handy.

Well, I was at a Technology Conference last week where both ATi and nVIDIA were presenting. The nVIDIA guys were talking about the immense power requirements of the 8xxx cards so I cornered them at dinner and they said "maybe" by July we would see the next advance in laptop cards. Of course manufacturer's "maybe" is often an optimistic wish so I don't know how much stock to put in it.

I kind of suspected it would be later (originally thought it would be end of next year at the soonest myself) rather than sooner, but that announcement about Nvidia testing mobile DX 10 cards has speculation stirring among the gamers who want to get their hands on it.
