I've been contemplating buying a notebook for a while now and I'm leaning towards the OCZ over the Alienware. I know, I know, notebooks are not ideal for swapping hardware components and you're lucky if you can. However, is the CPU easily upgradeable from say a T9400 to a quad core? Also, would you be able to knock the 3870's in crossfire up to 4870's when they roll out next year?

Is the GPU question just speculation because we really don't know anything about this mobile GPU yet?

As for the GPU upgrade it is unknown, it all depends on the socket type of the 4870's and if it is accepted in the bios. The CPU can be upgraded to the QX9300 which is a 2.53GHz quad core.

This Laptop being a DIY (do it yourself notebook) gives you a ability of swapping almost any component you want and it is extremely easy. Almost everything can be accessed by unscrewing the bottom panel.

The following Link is to the OCZ site. you can see a list of compatible hardware and a vid on how easy it is to upgrade.

The OCZ and the Alienware M17 is essentially the same notebook, so ideally the upgradeability should be the same. Just throwing that out there...

    Yes its unknown.

Also consider Overclocking voids alienware warranty.. if you're going to OC you might want to consider another option.

48xx upgradeability has pretty much been verified by a couple of sources. Just use the search button.

Would a 9800M GT/X run on this board? I thought I read somewhere it was being tested. What about in SLI? Why did OCZ go the ATI route? Heat? I heard the reason Asus never put a GTX (GT only) in their top-end notebook was the heat issue.

I realize the 3870 Crossfires would generally outperform a single 9800 GTX and the Nvidia GPUs are real expensive, but I am just curious.
