Assuming that the unit in the link is the ocz force extreme 840/alienware m17, the slot spec is mxm 2.1 type 3.... Upgrades are increasingly hard to find gpu wise.

I'd say if you have some spare cpus/ram/hdds laying around, its a pretty good deal, for 500 you'll have a wuxga laptop that is capable of playing most current games.

If you don't have spare parts, I'd go elsewhere, xoticpc the whitebook with a q9000 and the 3870x2 for under 1K, if you are really wanting a whitebook.

Also considering you can get a sandybridge i7 laptop now with a 2GB 6970M for for close to 1.8K on xotic....makes you really put things into perspective when buying a laptop that came out in 2008 for 1K...

The best graphics card this laptop will take is a 9600m GT or extremely rare ati 4670.

No its not the w840di, I'm pretty sure.

No it is not a good deal.

Do yourself a favor and get a barebones with a nice new chipset and graphics card included, like the p151hm from rjtech or the ms-16f1 from rkcomputer.

Rjtech has many more barebones as well for lower prices. They don't use upgradeable graphics, however they are all better than the 9600m GT

    It's not the w840di (OCZNBIM17A1DBXM88XTX2).....its the w840(OCZNBIM17A1DBXM88XT)

It can take whatever the w840di can, 3870x2 and 4850x2

    what's the main difference between W840 DI (OCZNBIM17A1DBXM88XTX2) and W840 (OCZNBIM17A1DBXM88XT) ?

    which is better?
    Which came out first?

    thanks

Both came out are the same time, and are essentially the same thing, case, mobo, keyboard, screen, etc....

the only difference is that the

W840di comes with two 3870s in crossfire mode.

    and the

W840 comes with one 3870, and the 2nd videocard slot is empty (so you can buy another 3870 and make it into a W840di)

Ohhhhh! So the W840 can receive a secondary card, it's not just limited to one... it's just the starter pack (1 or 2 gpus) that is different! great news there thor!

Now i need to get my hand on one!

Yup! exactly! I there where were other models that included bluray drives too, so you might seen some different variant model numbers.

So far the link provided at the top is the cheapest i've seen it, next would be on the xoticpc with a q9000 and the 3870 x2 and the cheapest options for 1k.

Are you looking to rebuild your m17 with the w840?

    Yes.

I just bought a M17 barebone from a guy on this forum, but he never sent it to me and still has my money... If he gets me my money back i will go for the Arima W840 which is actually the same thing as the M17. I have all the other components/parts ready.

I saw you are selling your 2x3870s on ebay... so you can confirm dual 4850s work on the W840 right?

    Good things take time ;)

Again if you read my first post...only a good deal if you have all the parts already....personally if you don't, this deal: Xoticpc FORCE EXTREME 840 is a better deal, you get a q9000, 3870x2, 2gb ram, 320gb hd.

....and thats only if you want to pay 1k for a laptop that came out in 2008...

Personally if you are going to spend 1k, spend 500 more and get this (configure with the radeon 6970 2GB):

Sager NP8170 (Built on Clevo P170HM) Custom Gaming Laptop

Will run circles around the w840di in every aspect....
