Looks like my onboard NIC died after just over a week. It says the cable is unplugged, I tried a couple of cables.
I disabled/re enabled it, I uninstalled and reinstalled it. Any other suggestions?

I just tried Slax, but it wouldn't load either of the GUIs for me. What LiveCD do you recommend?
I asked here first because my reseller is across the country from me, and I found them to be not very helpful during the sale.
I noticed there is no light on the hub when I power the machine on even before windows... there should be though, shouldn't there? -

I'm a little curious as to why you went ahead with a purchase from a reseller that wasn't very helpful at the time they would be seemingly the most helpful--when they're closing a sale with you?
It may be worth reaching out to them anyways. It seems you are having quite a few problems with your HEL80. I'd consider a return since you are obviously not satisfied with your purchase.
Maybe with a little more saving, you can get something you might be happier with. -
I've seen a lot of static build up in network cables, and have had ports on routers die from it, as well as an onboard network card on my desktop die, presumably from static as well. No more gig-E for me on that machine
Anyway, it's possible, and I've seen it happen in dry climates. Hopefully your reseller will fix it for you, though. -
My laptop seems to be having similar issues however my NIC card does eventually come up. Can you try plugging the cable in and leaving it for approx 2 minutes. I can recreate this problem if I put my machine on standby and try and log back in it takes up approx 2 minutes for the Nic card to become active.

I phoned them and they offered to look at it and replace it if they found hardware problems. It would have taken about 2 weeks for the whole thing to happen. Good thing I don't have to do that now.
I wish I had more cash to put down on a higher end machine, but the fact is I don't. I need PCMCIA for my work, and few other machines have it. No existing PCMCIA adapter works with my specialized hardware, so I'm kind of stuck in that department.
Oh well, at least it performs pretty well in games!
Thanks for your help, everyone. I'm glad I took the time to ask around and test it out. Cool LiveCD, too! -
The Asus G1p has a PCMCIA slot...not that you're looking for another notebook at the moment.

Next time it happens, try restarting your router, modem or whatever access point you are using. I have this same problem from time to time when my laptop comes out of standby mode. Restarting the router always fixes it.
