Nb. I liked my averatec notebook until it decided to overheat and stop functioning. I have sent it in three times for repairs, to no avail. I feel like this little guy [B)]

I am sick of it. Averatec CLAIMS that this is "very rare" and they simply "do not hear of this happening." The last draw came when the idiot techs, the third time it was in their facility, decided to format my hard drive, just to be sure it was not a hard drive issue (after having replaced the motherboard for failure and heat sink). It was not, but my data was not saved or transfered, like Dell or Gateway would have done in the same position.

I am looking for everyone who has had overheating problems (large or small) with their units, past and present to contact me in order to make certain they are full of it. I want to be in the position to make some demands for myself and others. If you are having problems currently, I have their official corporate offices phone number (the one they won't give you) and am willing to send it off to you via email. Please drop me a line at [email protected]

I am serious here, it is time to take action. I have had enough of this crap.

wow, I take it your a bit frustrated, and you should be.
my 6130 also runs a bit warm, due to the nature of this system, ie 3GHZ Pent, AGP video, etc.

I resorted to using a laptop cooler and this helps quite a bit.

Regardless, Averatec should issue you a full refund or replacement if the repairs are not adequate.
    good luck
    av.

I'm with you. There are threads over on the Unofficial Averatec Forum as well: http://www.averatecforums.com/ . I suggest you post there.

I've done some significant testing and believe that it's not the processor that's overheating (I did replace the silicone with high quality silver thermal grease). My theory is that it's the northbridge. Compounding the problem is the placement of the hard drive right next to the northbridge. Both together generate quite a bit of heat and it's under your left palm (so all you users know what I'm referring to). The only way I can keep it running when gaming/video editing is with a notebook cooler. The fan must be directly underneath the northbridge and you'll want a model with plenty of airflow blowing up into the grill. Buy another standard 12 volt 80mm fan and place it on its side blowing into the empty PCMCIA slot. You can also buy a fan which plugs into the PCMCIA slot. This will keep the hard drive running at a cool 35ºC even under stress. Without the fan it runs hot (47º-51º+ under stress). Usually the machine'll crash when the hard drive hits 47º-50ºC.

There is also a bios problem which is causing (or at least contributing) the northbridge to overheat. I can post more on that later. One solution which may help is more memory (at least 1 gig). More memory reduces hard drive access and northbridge processing.

U said u can buy a fan that plugs into the pcmcia slot. I've never seen one before and was wondering where would u get one of these. The slot is quite thin and does teh cooler suck the air out thru an exhaust or blow air in?

I've also found that removing the PCMCIA slot cover it'll keep your HD cooler by allowing the warm air to escape.

I'm a tech support person and I just came across a 3210 I believe it was, and it was locking up quite a bit. I noticed the CPU fan was stopped and it was very hot. I was curious to see how big of a problem this was and now I can see it seems to be happening quite a bit. I agree, if it was the CPU I think more notebooks with the AMD processor in it would be having the same problem, but from what I've seen so far, it looks to be something else going on here. Not sure if it's the Northbridge either, but perhaps a placement or BIOS problem.

I had the same problem with the so called customer service at Averatec I had a issue where my ac adapter port shorted out. I told them that ALL I wanted for them to do was replace that one thing They were given VERY explicit instructions not to TOUCH the hard drive since I had a lot of irreplaceable suff on there. There was no way for me to back them up since I had no power. However in the all knowing wisdom the idios still erased my hard drive. I fought with these idiots for 3 weeks and then thet finally sent me a replacement but it shuts off everytime I try to play a game or for no reason at all. I will NEVER buy an Averatec again and I suggest that others avoid them as well.

What you could have done is take the Hard drive out and pick up a 2.5 inch enclosure from Compusa for 20 dollars, hook it up to another machine and transfer the files that are important and put them on a CD or DVD. It's always good to think outside the box. I've had my 6130hs for a year and half now, it's never over heated or shut down.

I'm finally sending my unit in. I have the same problem, 6130HS-20 overheats to the point of shutting down without warning. And that with TWO loud fans blowing all the time.

    :eek:verheat:

    :noisyfan:

I'm buying a new laptop, a Sager 5720 with 2GB 533MHz RAM, GeForce 7800GTX, Pentium M 2.0GHz (beats the 3.0 P4 on my Averatec I believe) and a 17" screen. It's a bit more expensive, but is more rugged, quicker and won't overheat.

Once I have the new laptop I'm sending my Averatec in for a screen replacement, RAM upgrade and buying an external cooler.

Or maybe I should just sell the **** thing. It was good to me for about 9 months, then it began its long slow decline into near-unusability.

Only send it in if you can stand the frustrations others have gone through waiting for the unit to be returned and after having it returned they find something else wrong with it.

With the 3200 series, the main problem was with the power jack heating up because of poor or no solder on some of the joints. But I believe Averatec has finally owned up to this and is fixing it for free. But it still costs you to send it in and then there is the wait to get it back.
