    hi guys

anyone know who the OEM supplier for PC Specialist.co.uk is?

    I'm thinking the Top Spec Laptop chassis specifically .. I need a nice notebook for 6th form, with powerful components preferably, and can get;

    -15.4", 1440x900 LCD
    -2.4Ghz T8300
    -2GB 667Mhz Ram
    -512mb 8600GT
    -160GB 7200RPM HD
    -Internal Bluetooth Module
    -Card Reader/Integrated Wireless/Either 2nd 9 cell battery or 2nd Mains adapter

    for ~£680.

Elsewhere that sort of system is going to cost me easily £800+

So, anyone have any experience? Have that notebook? Or know what model the chassis is (so i can look up some reviews)?

    many thanks

Have you checked uk dell outlet, they have some nice deals sometimes.
maybe you can find a inspiron 1520/vostro 1500 or a xps m1530 with simmilar spec. I think dell's more trustworthy.

    mitch92uk,

The laptop you are after is manufactured by Compal. The chassis is the Compal FL-92.
You can purchase this laptop from this site. RJTECH ships worldwide and they have some of the highest reseller ratings. They are also pretty inexpensive, so you should be able to get quite a powerful machine for your budget.

    Hi Tianx :)

I'ver checked out the dell outlet and there are some pretty good deals on there, but the costs of Dell's batteries are really putting me off .. since the LG factory fire in South Korea (think) it's been £100 to go from a 6 to a 9 cell, whereas elsewhere, pc spec for instance, a 9 cell comes as standard and for another £45 you can get a second 9 cell.

I'm doing .. Physics, Maths and Further Maths fo sho. I'm interested in doing some engineering at uni hopefully, but I will most likely do 2 other subjects also, such as Government and Politics, Law, Applied IT. Likely G&T + Law atm but I keep changing my mind =D

    what about you?

Much <3 KTRON, many thanks, appreciate it.

    EDIT : @ KTRON

on RJTech it's $45 for an internal bluetooth module and $45 for internal wireless ... is this not a bit steep? Also I take it the charger will work with the UK national grid? If a notebook I've customised comes to $1444 which atm is ~£730, will it be more than this due to shipping/import tax?

Powernotebooks seems reasonable but seemingly they don't ship outside the US ... do XOTIC PC ship outside the US?

The charger is universal and will work anywhere (you will need an adaptor for the mains plug).

You would be charged 17.5% VAT on import and will have to pay this to the freight company so they can clear it through customs.

Another UK company selling the FL-92 is Rizeon. I've not bought anything from them but I have had some contact and they were very responsive to my enquiries.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the Vat, well then it is probably = better to buy it through a European manufacturer.
I would contact RJTECH in an email, they will get back to you in 1-2 days. They are very nice. I would ask them if the Vat is included on their parts.
I was going to recommend Rock Direct, but it does not look like any of their systems are based off of the Compal Fl-92.
The only thing I can think of, is if you know someone in the USA, who you can trust. Have it shipped to there house, and then they can ship it to you. Its a hassle, but probably the only way to get a great deal. Well other than you flying to the USA to pick it up.

So where should I buy from? PCspecialist seems quite cheap still, and because they're in the UK there's no "hidden" charges.

I would only import if there is still a significant saving after freight and tax. Also, would you need to send it back for any service?

Also, a US-sourced computer will probably have a US keyboard which has one less key and no £ sign. It is possible to get used to this but it is inconvenient.

    If I were to buy a notebook from the "top spec machine" section with;

    512mb 8600gt
    t8300 2.4ghz
    2gb ram ( can up it l8r)
    160gb 7200rpm hd

How futureproof is it for mostly schoolwork possibly with some gaming? could i get 2,3,4 years?

    cheers
