Hello All,
i recently saw this MEDION laptop at bestbuy [14.1" model]
it looks very good, and pretty solid. i've had a history of lemons [emachines, AMD-xp-m proccessor, constant overheating] so i've had some experience with not as big names, and sort of bargain laptops. but this has centrino, and i feel like u cant go wrong w/ centrino.
what do you guys think? i dono how their warranty system will work, seein as they are based in germany.
also, would u guys buy a T40 laptop for around 990? basic specs, sitll under warranty til 06, or a t41 for 990?
thanks all!

Hi,
I'm surprised Best Buy is selling these. There is a store called Aldis where you get cheap no name food mainly/some extra products surprise and limited weekly. It was the first and only place I ever heard of this manufacturer. They offered a Medion notebook 2 years ago that sounded like a dream for $500. The flyer said 15 per store. There are 3 in my city. They were sold out in 10 minutes of opening their doors. The reviews were incredible and people were more than happy. 1 year later I saw a Medion DVD player/recorder for $79. I jumped on it. It's incredible. It's not basic. It will play more types of CD's/DVD's than mentioned. Features galore for a DVD recorder/player. I rent a minimum of 300 movies a year and I have played at least that on in and recorded tons of DVD's.
Back to the notebook and manufacturer. I don't know what the price is from Best Buy but if It's anything like what the Aldis price was for what was offered on it 2 years ago, I wouldn't think twice. For that price I wouldn't even care about a warranty.I have a feeling Best Buy's price even though I love Best Buy,is no doubt overpriced. There was an entire reviews originally when these were sold from local city papers to two of the nationwide (like PC World) magazines I read. They basically said that these sold at "Aldis" specifically came as a surprise to most people never even hearing of them. There was a follow up story a year later in my local city newspaper (not a small city) and what they found was that there were few if any problems. No regrets and of course explained about the company.
I wish I knew the price and that you would post it from Best Buy. I know It's more than if sold at this Aldis store, absolutely! Will you post the price please [?][?][?]
If you have an Aldis store which is really a nothing type of discount bring/buy your own bags, mainly cash only storeand they offer this manufacturer for any type of tech products, jump on it! This company is excellent!
I'd be interested in the price, specs, details before I even thought about a warranty. Depending on the price/details then I would decide on the extended warranty from Best Buy. you can't compare this to an Emachine which is junk. You get more than you pay for with the Medion!!! My only concern would be knowing that Best Buys price might be low enough and worth it if you will tell the price/details but not compatred to everytime Aldis has them. Their prices are always so unbelievably low that you think It's junk.
Can you post all the details, please [?]
P.S My brother in law is from Germany and knew all about them. Of course he has to have the best of everything tech wise and builds his own or adds until It's exploding with features.

I would not buy such a machine just for those warranty reasons.
Dell Inspiron 700m

TZ,
I went and actually my Best Buy had the notebook. It's like I said ,not worth the money. A great company but if it were $500 ,sure! The one at Aldi's 2 years ago was gorgeous no comparison.
Did you find anything that you are close to buying? You mentioned a couple and even with my problems with Dell. With a 35% coupon the 700M is worth it and you can get it for $800. If you can wait there will be close to that or a coupon better than any right now. It's the only Dell I did not have complaints about and worked but I sent it back because my notebook's were gifts and I didn't realize what I'd end up with when I received 2 Defective 9300's and didn't think it was necessary at the time to keep both and take advantage of the person buying them.

have the akoya ls since 4 weeks and there is just one big issue! the keybord is the worst i have ever seen. i really like the notebook and i hope they can fix the problem. i dont wanna hve the akoya ex, because its bigger and got the old centrino with just 400mhz bus.
the screen is very good, but compair to my sony notebook i have, the sony is more colourful. but the xbrite is realy awesome. the notebook boots realy fast and there is no anoing software installed just the norton but its realy easy to remove. it looks nice, is reliable, and the batterie last about 3 hours. the next little problem i got is that the dvd software is ok, but the sound is so quiet that i cant even hear the voices of the actors when im in an airplane and want to watch a movie. i do not have this problem when i listen to some mp3s on i tunes or with winamp. just with cyberlink.
but beside that.. if the keybord would work like a regular keybord the notebook is realy worth the money! just test the notebook before you buy it. maybe its just mine, but i heard already from more people about the same problem... will go for a new one.. maybe that works..
actualy medion is a german company. i know this company already since a long time, because i am from austria. they sell a lot of stuff at the aldi stores. they import all the electronic from china and sell it really cheap in europe. most time realy good quality though...
