Does anyone knows the roadmap for Penryn?

SRR (Santa Rosa Refresh) Penryn is already shipping.
The new Montevina Penryn should be released for shipping in very late June or early July. -
Yes, but what will be the speed, T9500?

Product details are still under a Non Disclosure Agreement, but there are some details available at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montevina#Montevina_platform_.282008.29
-
Will there be a new iflxx revision once montevina is out?

Compal will release a new model to support Montevina

And, if it were to do that, would you call that winning? -
I think laptops are quite powerful today for most applications, so 2 years is a good cycle for me. However laptops should be upgradable, you could just change the CPU after 2 years, not to purcahse a complete laptop.

Waiting longer just leaves you in old technology longer. A professional like yourself should figure out a replacement cycle of some defined period, and then just buy whatever is the most current technology at the time...checking first to see if there is anything significant coming out in say the next 3 months. Anything beyond that and you just sit there with older technology longer.
It is just a cost of the job. Think about what a computer costs on a monthly basis (e.g. $1,500 divided by 24 months = $62.50/month) and you will realize that, considering what it will allow you to do, it is incredibly cheap, and it takes very little energy to run. Show me another business or scientific tool that can do so much...for so little -
Based on your words then I would need to buy another laptop soon

How old is your Wirelessman, and do you use it professionally?
-
I bought it in October last year, so I'm in my six month. Yes, I use it professionally, I'm a consultant in wireless technology. But I do not need extreeme speed. If I want the latest technology is more because I'm an early adopter, I like to put my hands on the latest gadgets.
However you will recognize that the 6 month cycle is pure business so companies continue making money regardless if it becomes a financial burden to the consumer. Even if an OEM already has the fastest chipset, they won't sell it unless the competition also has it, it's all a question of remaining in business and charge premiums for products w/o competition. -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Since you are a consultant in wireless technology I would think you would need a new Montevina laptop because the new wireless technology is one of the most important improvements that Montevina offers...
Details about the new wireless technology can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montevina#Montevina_platform_.282008.29 -
I will wait for your excellent quote, remember I told you my next laptop I would get it from you.

We will be here to serve you when ever you are ready
However you do know that we only ship to USA addresses, eh? For some reason I thought you were in Canada. -
Nope, I'm from Canada but I live close to the President
In Maryland. -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Ah well then, that's good!
-
But I think you don't ship here, right?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
We ship Sager laptops to Maryland...
We just don't ship PowerPro or Crown laptops there due to Maryland's House Bill 488 because it would cost us $10,000 just to register there for the 1st year. -
And I guess the one I would buy would be the PowerPro, right?
-

I don't know. I thought you were interested in the Clevo M860TU...am I wrong?
-

-
I said 2 years but I guess 3 years is good too. -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Every two to three years is what most people use as a replacement cycle.
However if you really want to stay current (3 years is a long time with laptop technology) you could approach it another way:
1. What would your laptop be worth at the end of 3 years? Say, maybe $3-400?
2. What if you replaced your laptop every 6 months or so, and you sold what you had each time at about a $400 loss? If you started at $2,000, and lost $3-400 every 6 months, at the end of three years you would have lost $1,800-$2,400.
3. Therefore you can continually use older and older technology over a 3 year period and lose $1,600-1,700 at the end of 3 years, or you can stay consistently current and your "Total Cost of Operation" would be only slightly higher (about $5.50-19.50 a month).
This is why I like to stay consistently current instead of waiting until my laptop is 3 years old before I replace it. -

You lose more than that Donald, you forgot to include the price of the new laptop every 6 months.
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Wirelessman, I did not forget to include the price of the new laptop.
You start with a laptop that costs say $2,000. 6 months later, while it is still under warranty, you should be able to sell it for about $1,600-1,700. You then buy another $2,000 laptop and you have lost $3-400.
Have you noticed that you always get more laptop for the same amount of money as time goes on? -
Oh, I get you.
-
I paid mine $2,000, and I don't think I can sell it for $1,600.
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
There are lots of people out there, including parents, that would like to save $3-400 on a 6 month old laptop that still has at least 6 months left on the warranty.

Hmmm, we find buyers for our laptops, and our customer's laptops, with a delightful degree of regularity at 15-20% off of the original price. The new ones don't typically drop in price that fast.
-
Yes, but you're talking about a computer store. People looking for computers would go to you anyway and some fraction would see something cheap and go for it. People who might be interested in my 6 month old laptop would be very unlikely to know I'm even interested in selling it.
Also, what do you mean by your "customer's laptops"? Are these the ones that are returned? -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Our customers often come to us and want to buy a new laptop and ask us to help them sell their current one. Just look at all of the SOLD units in our forum. We often sell them on the phone as well.
There is also a Buy, Sell, Trade section of this forum. -
You can post on the trade and sell thread to sell your laptop.
-
-
Manwhenever u're ready for your barebone.. and if my CPU price is lower than market.. just PM me for that Penryn
. But first try to get ur IFL90 sold first hehehe
-
Are you baking them in your kitchen oven?
-

-
NBR and ?
-
And the powernotebooks forum he linked to earlier in the thread. I might actually try this idea out -- I'll be out of the USA for a while during the summer and possibly later, but when I get back, Montevina will probably be out and there might even be a price cut at some places. It also depends on how well my JFL92 fares with constant travel, Mass Effect and Dragon Age. We'll see.
-
That's make sense, I'll try it too, but I think I would like to wait just a little bit so all bugs are cleared in the first batch of Montevinas.

Yes, I did, I'll working on this so I can get my next laptop soon. I'll check what you have on your web site, and again price is not my priority, customer service is, and I cannot wrong with you and company.
-
Yep I will get the new verson directly when it will be ready for selling.
-
And I guess you will do a review as well. Did you read the thread I sent you?
-
yep and send you a reply.
