Anyone heard of this laptop ?

I just bought one. I'm happy with it so far. Thought I'd read a few reviews online about it...but there is nothing...absolutely no information out there at all. I can't even find a 'laptops' section on the Philips website, never mind the X53 model !

I don't even know if the X53 is a new model or old. I found it hard to find one in the shops, everybody seemed to have sold out. Is this becuase it's a new model in high demand, or an old model that is no longer in production ?

In short...er...does anybody know anything about this laptop ??

I saw this laptop for sale yesterday and loved it's spec, size and price.
The sales assistant told me that they are getting in the replacement X55 next week, so I should wait for her to give me a call when it is in stock.

As far as I can tell, the only differences between the X53 and X55 are a larger hard drive, and bigger capacity processor.

Like you, I have looked for reviews but can't find anything, I called Laptops Direct trying to find a cheaper quote but they hadn't heard of it, and also couldn't find a laptops section on the Philips website.

Seeing as you are the only other person in the world to have one of these, maybe you could tell me how you're getting on with it. Happy?

In the UK the X53 with a 1.66GHz Core Duo T2050 processor seems to be current stock in major retailers on and off line (e.g. PC World, £799).

It also seems that there is an X51 and an X52 still available.

The X51 has a Pentium M 740 processor and would seem to be an older model still available at a cheaper price (Currys, £600).

    The X52 has a 1.66GHz Core Duo T2300E processor (Pixmania £790).

I have not yet looked up the differences between the two processors but the X52 and X53 seem very similar.

There are two reviews of the X52 @ www.reviewcentre.com, both pretty positive.

The Philips laptop seems to undercut rivals from Toshiba, Samsung and others in terms of specification and price.

Do you suppose between the X53 and the Toshiba Satellite U200-161, the X53 is better?

I've seen them both, but im not sure which one would be a better buy...anyone care to speculate? :D

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you about this X55 spec.

    Here it is though...

    Intel Core Duo 2 T5500 Preocessor 1.66GHz
    667 MHz FSB
    2 MB Cache
    1024 MB RAM
    100 GB Hard Drive
    Dual Layer DVD ReWriter MultiDrive
    12.1 Widescreen Display
    Microsoft Windows Media Centre
224MB Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics

    Price £849.99 (Dixons)

I called them this morning and they are expecting it to be in stock at the end of the week. The funny thing is no one seems to know anything about it until I inisist it does exist - then they look on their system and tell me that it's on it's way.

I've looked at the Toshiba Satellite U200-161 too - but I would definately wait for the X55 instead - well I am doing actually. Hope it turns out to be the right decision.

And now they are listing two more new models in X5x series (I can't keep up with the rapid changes to specification and model numbers):

X55P = as X55 but using new budget Core 2 T5200 processor but strangely is more expensive at £899.99

    X56 = as X55 with faster T5600 (1.83 GHz) processor but smaller 80Gb disc at £799.99

How easy is it to upgrade the X5x series to 2Gb RAM? Or should I just wait a few more days for the X57?

    Oh, BTW:

These laptops are made by Twinhead exclusively for the DSG Group (Dixons, Currys, PCworld) who are using the "Philips" branding. Thus, in the UK, no one except DSG stores will know anything about them... These laptops are available in the US with slightly different specifications under the Averatec brand (with Averatec model names).

Does the x53 not have dual core? It should dominate a pentium 4 anyday.

I thought the graphics were integrated?

    • Core Duo (Yonah) – Intel’s first dual-core processor, the Core Duo (32-bit) offers two CPUs on one die without increasing power consumption.
    • Core 2 Duo (Merom) (I believe this is the same as the intel core duo2) – The 64-bit version of the Core Duo, it features slightly better performance than the Core Duo and is capable of running Windows Vista and other 64-bit applications.
Look at 'Chrisyano' and his thread on which laptops to buy it will tell u most things you need to know on this subject.
Also has anyone bought any of the x55+ range as I am quite interested in buying one of these. (or if in the US the Averatec equivelent)

The specification for the Twinhead H12Y (link posted previously) says One DDR II 533/667 SODIMM Slots each for 256/512/1024MB (Max. 1GB). If you are already at 1GB, then that is the limit (but a very expensive 2GB module might work). If you are at 512MB then you will need to replace the existing module.

    ah nuts.
I was told by the PC World salesman when I purchased it that there were two memory slots and it was upgradeable to 2GB. It also specifies that it is 2x512MB SODIMMs in the specs on the PCServiceCall website (PCWorld support).

Opening the machine I found that there is 1 slot with 1x1GB SODIMM. I now have 2 brand spanking new 1GB SODIMMs that can't be used :-(

PCWorld won't trade the memory for a 2GB module :-(

    argh!

I bought a Philips X55 last december, ignoring that it was a virtually non-existent PC.
To my regret this very nice computer appeared to shut down unexpectedly anytime and refusing to restart.
It has been "repaired" now 6 (six) times by PC-City (spanish subsidiary of PC-World) and keeps failing, PC-City doesn't mind to exchange the PC, as it is always "repaired" until it shuts down once and again.

Better always make sure to purchase well known brands with a sound post-sales service by the shop where you buy.
