Hello everyone. I am fast approaching my high school graduation, and, because i am intending to go to uni, I thought that it was about time that i took buying a notebook seriously.
Basically, my question is as it is in the thread title. Is the Portableone MX the best notebook in terms of performance, durability, price and portability? From what I have read, this would seem to be so. And let's not forget the excellent customer service that they provide. It pleases me to know that when (even if) I call them up for assitance, that i will reach an English speaking person (recalls memories of calls to Dell in India).
I would be needing it for such tasks as word processing, spreadsheeting and net surfing. Also, this notebook (according to their site) comes with a X600 ATI graphics card, so that will surely come in handy for such games as World of Warcraft and Counter Strike: Source, that I will most likely be playing at one point or another.
Basically, I believe that this notebook is a great all-rounder. Weighing only 5 lbs, it's not exactly an ultraportable, but with all the featuers that are put into this machine, it's well worth the extra weight. If anybody else has bought a Portableone MX machine lately, I would be grateful if they could give me a quick review on it (keyboard, touchpad, graphics performance, etc.).
Thanks,
Shadow_1

Actually it is closer to 5.5 pounds with the optical drive in it. It is a very good laptop. The Sony BX with x700 card will be worth a look when it is released. Small laptops with good GPUs don't grow on trees.

Why would a studious college student need a dedicated graphics card? He/she couldnt possibly have the time nor desire to play computer games...
But yeah, seriously, if you want dedicated graphics I think the w3v/portable one MX is great because it is perfectly sized (big enough to use as a main computer but small enough to carry around). Not to mention its a powerhouse than can outperform a lot of 17'' monsters.
Oh, in addition to the sony bx series there is also a v6va by Asus; 15'' matte screen with an x700, 5.5 lbs currently available in europe and maybe coming to north america, if you're into the waiting game and all. -
Haha, yeah. I'm hoping that I will be busy with my studies, but i want something to do in my spare time (aside from making blog entries).
Yes, i've been waiting quite a while, so if something promising turns up, I would be happy to wait and give it a look.
Does anyone have any other laptops that they can suggest as good alternatives? -
THIS IS THE PERFECT COLLEGE LAPTOP!! I'm a first year at UCLA and I have been taking this laptop to all my lectures. I have horrible handwriting and can type faster anyways and this computer has been great. The keyboard is nice and the size is absolutely perfect. When I don't have heavy textbooks in my backpack with it, I totally forget that my laptop is in my backback.
Also, now that I have been using the screen it actually seems like a pretty big screen. The WIDESCREEN is awesome. Battery life is great and I haven't even done some tweaking that I've heard can help.
This computer is seriously very very nearly perfect and I don't think there is anything in the market that comes close. The heat is really a non-issue... you might think about it once a week or something but no burns or anything haha.
My only dissapointment was one dead pixel.... I've heard that PortableOne is good about checking for that stuff so maybe I just got the one bad one. But that definitely should NOT turn you away..... buy it..... now -
I'm hoping that P1 will give a big price cut this holiday season since the W3V itself has seen some significant price cuts.

ussually computer prices go up because the companies know that demand for laptops go up during the holidays. although P1 may be diffrent

Let me preface this by first saying that I am generally the ultimate bargain shopper. However, Portableone's customer service reminds me of those stupid Mastercard commercials...priceless
. Seriously, while it is always preferable to save a few dollars, if/when you need support, being able to just pick up a phone and immediately reach someone who speaks English and acts like they care about your problem, and will work with you to resolve it is worth something too, and after having benefited from their service with a Fujitsu unit, I can tell you first-hand that their support is all that it is reputed to be. In my opinion, that is worth a few dollars more even, so even if they are not the cheapest place around (and remember, they have modified the units so the MX is not the same as a W3V), I would strongly consider purchasing from them anyway because knowing they are there to help if you need it is worth something too.
