it should be noted that sometimes, its not final. Last year for example, the HEL80 that was displayed in Taiwan, ended up being very different from what you see now.

There's going to be a VBI-version of the laptops. http://downloadfinder.intel.com/ lists the new Compal laptops, although it doesn't have any downloads yet.

Goren, do you have any pictures of wht the Compal HEL-80 looked like at first?

yeah, that would be great, plus, may I add, wicked cool looking machines!!

sweet. makes me get second thoughts on the hel80 i purchased ;)

edit: btw, another thing that might be cool to see would be the 'joystick', the so called trackpoint is it? we just call it the clit over here, no offence intented to anyone. :)

    regards!

i forgot where I found the first HEL80 pic unfortunately.

these new models seem to be quite different from the last.. totally different port lay outs on the left side. bottom of the screen on both seem to curve inwards compared to the flat designs of the last two models.

these machines are still very likely to change in design if I understand correctly these are only designer models to show off the possible outcome of the venture between the availability of intels new chips and the compal engineers.

more to come is something I'd definetly say is to be expected - just look at how fast the IT market moves, if these are only test/view models, there is a lot that might change between they actually hit the local shelves at tesco round the corner.

    cheers,

    //m.

Question: Is the NVIDIA NB8P a DirectX10 card?

Yes, it is a DX10 card.

I like these much better than the current Compals, which are quite ugly IMO (the HGL30 especially)

mm, sweet design indeed. what I also miss in the compal line is some mid-end system- so far, we have either rubbish integrated graphics low-end, high battery life version, or high-end graphics, lower battery life version. how about some middle model, compromising the best of the two worlds? I'd love it - I now for example have a HEL80,which, despite it's greateness, is pretty much overkill for my graphics needs - yet, I'd rather have that with less battery life than an integrated card, since it's pretty much a desktop replacement in my case.

    regards,

some more pics, this time from Marasst, which I believe is Europe based?
don't mind the Intel pics or data from there, seems like they haven't updated the data yet as its using the older HEL80's data..

Is there any information as to if the new model will incorporate PCMCIA or an Express slot or maybe even an combination of the two like on the HEL80?

judging from the picture above, it seems that at least with the IFL90, there will only be an express slot, which you can see on the left side.

    Thanks noobified :)

Goren is correct, from what we have been provided for preliminary specs they have went away with the PCMCIA. But this could change when released?

The color scheme is nice. Here is what we have on the LED's
    - 3 K/B indicators: Caps Lock (Blue), and Num Lock (Blue), Scroll Lock (Blue)
    - 1 LED for IDE HDD activity (Blue)
    - 1 LED for System status (Power On / Suspend) (Blue)
    - 1 LED for Battery status (Charging / Full / L1 / L2) (Blue/Amber)
    - 1 LED for Wireless LAN & Bluetooth (Blue/Amber/Purple)
    - 1 LED for Power Button(White)
    - 1 LED for Mute(Amber)
    - 1 LED for Power USB on(Amber)

^do you know if it'll feature any brushed aluminum accents like the HEL80? I recalled some early versions of the HEL80 were missing some of it and looked plainer.

I think this is one of their best looking 15.4" models yet! with some brushed aluminum on the edges and on the lid, it'll be the best looking 15.4" whitebook since the Z70 series :D

i like the black plastic design. if it'll be the same kind as the EL80/HEL80 incorporates on for example the bottom, I'd much rather have that with no brushed crap - that would be overkill in my taste, too much flash/bling/gloss and you end up with a Christmas tree instead of a laptop computer.

keep the currently presented designs i say! :)

It looks like I will be skipping this generation. My HEL80 is not even 1 year old yet and has been working great. Plus the only WSXGA+ new model has this monster video card... who needs 512MB?!?! I thought the nvidia 7600 with 256 was a little over my needs... but the new one looks like too much for me. However, the next step below is an integrated intel card Intel GM965/GL960 and ugly WXGA resolution... nothing in between.

Just for curiosity, how would the ntel GM965/GL960 compare to the nVidia Go 7600?

Yay, Donald. Push real hard for us matte lovers :). I sincerely hope matte screens don't disappear altogether in the coming years. I mean I can live with a glossy...but would rather not ;).
My thoughts exactly. Next summer I will be very interested in a Montevina-based system, though. Doesn't make me not want the new crop of tech though...hopefully the buying itch doesn't get too out of hand this summer :).

Not to worry, I too prefer the matte screen so we will continue to source it until we drop.

For those who have the HEL80 I would stay with it and wait until next year.

yeah, was just gonn say. also you could always get a paint job.

Anyway, if we're at colours, what i'd actually like to see too if any other colour, would be an all white notebook.

Black or white, kinda two choices you know. would be really neat, and show that compal is not all about 'just' build quality and performance/price ratio, but style and design as well! :)

Well, I think that as a whole, the new generation of compals looks more dignified and less controversial than the outgoing HEL80 and HGL30. I personally hated the HGL30 and didn't care much for the HEL80, but these new ones are pretty nice looking, if a bit generic.

I really like the specs on the IFL00, pretty sweet for a 14", and it isn't overweight like the HGL30 either (5.5lbs vs 5.95)

I guess the benefit of the older designs was that they had some character, as opposed to the new generation, which have a generic look thats pretty similar to many other notebook lines out there (HP Compaq business line to mention one). I don't mind that much, being understated is rarely a bad thing.

Wow, the IFT00 is exactly what I've been looking for.

What resellers in the US could I get this from? When should they start selling?

most likely, the usual guys who sell Compals now.
    powernotebooks.com
    xoticpc.com
    discountlaptops.com
    rjtech.com

of course they don't have it now and it doesn't seem clear when it'll come out. However in general, the past 14" compals didn't show until late July, early August, while the 15.4 ones came earlier.

We have been told around the end of the month or the first part of June the IFL90 / IFL91 will be available ;) We haven't heard any more about the IFT00 / IFT01 arrival yet. I assume it will be like the HGL30 and be just a little behind the 15.4"

Any price update on the IFL90? Also will its WSXGA screen be glossy?

This looks like the perfect computer for me if price isnt too high.

Sorry, no news on pricing or the screen yet.

You can count on the fact that it will announced here the very moment the information is available.

I had been planning to get an ASUS notebook, but this Compal IFT00 has all the specs together that I couldn't really find together in any announced ASUS refresh(n8600 gfx, 14", fingerprint reader, battery life)... Can anyone tell me how Compal models rate in quality? I mean, how would it compare to say, a W3J? (Only because I would buy a hypothetical W3J refresh with a dx10 card/vista/fingerprint reader in a heartbeat)
