Hi guys, I´m from Brazil and a i got a HEL81 about 1 year and a few months. Now I bought 2 sets of 1gb DDR2 667 Kingston. When I install i notice that the second slot isn´t working  (the back slot). If I insert the memory on the second slot the HEL81 doesn´t boot! And then I test the two memorys on the first slot only and it works fine!
    Does anywhone had this problem??

    Thanks!

    Regards!

You have pretty well proved that your second slot doesn't work and will probably have to be replaced.

Please contact your vendor to arrange for the repair.

Maybe a little short, but can this also be related to an BIOS update.

It could be a BIOS issue, I do have a similar problem with another older computer, I bought more RAM and they don't work in the second slot. I'm planning to flush the BIOS, hopefully that will work.

Well, I just flashed to the 123B BIOS version now, and the problem continues!
I´ll contact the vendor, but with no hope, because 1 year warranty has expired...

So you have to pay for the repair...big deal...you have to pay to maintain any gear you own from your car to your laptop...tis the way of the world :)

I know, but I just discovered the law in Brazil says that this is a "hidden defect" because I don´t notice easily, and the dealer has to fix it anyway...

I´d contacted the dealer and I´m waiting an answer! :)

@Paladin: During the system test, does the OEM normally test both slots even though we have bought just one RAM?

    Yes, both slots are tested.

The problem with the "hidden defect" theory in law is that unless the dealer willingly accepts the theory that the slot has been defective all along, it will be far more expensive and time consuming to force them to do the repair through court action than just paying for the repair.

Out of warranty repairs generally have a 90 day warranty. Check with your dealer for their policy.

Out of warranty component replacements like optical drives, batteries and AC Adapters usually carry a 1 year warranty, hard drives will usually carry a 1 year warranty from the OEM but may carry a 3 to 5 year warranty directly from the hard drive manufacturer, memory would typically be 1 year from the OEM but may be lifetime from the memory manufacturer...

Check to make sure the TV Tuner cables are not touching the ram slots. It can cause the slots not to function.

The question is about the HEL81 (not the IFL90). The picture is accurate except the HEL81 does not support a TV Tuner (only the HEL80 does), so there shouldn't be any issue regarding the cables.

Even though the memory slots in the IFL90 and IFL91 are in a slightly different location, they are still under a panel on the bottom of the laptop, so the issues would still be the same.

It should have two cables one for the antenna and another one for the s-video input.

That cable seems to be well isolated, I would be surprised it is the reason of your problem.

I agree with Wirelessman. That cabling has nothing to do with a TV Tuner and it does appear to be quite isolated...it is highly unlikely that it has anything to do with your issue. You will also note that your motherboard does not have the support for a TV Tuner as is shown in the picture of the HEL80 in post #12. Notice the Molex power connector, antenna and two screw posts to secure the TV Tuner card in that picture.

I noticed the wire to the right of the memory, in post #16, has less insulation or protection then the same wire in post #19. ???

It doesn't matter, as long as it has the right isolation.
