Windows XP Pro...
Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but I wasn't sure of a keyword search to use for this, and I dont recall the issue on any of the threads I've read to date..
I'm trying to figure out why my laptop is for lack of a better word "locking up" after I have the lid closed for some time... I dont have hibernation or suspend enabled. I tried disabling hard disk power down before work, so I'll see when I get home if the system is still running.
Basically, with A/C power... the notebook will work when I'm using it.. I'll close the lid and go to bed, when I wake up and open the lid, the screen wont light up and the HD light doesn't flicker... I've pressed probably every key on the machine, including the sleep combo, with no success.
Only thing I can do is hold power until it shuts off, then turn it back on. Windows doesn't even seem to aknowledge the fact I shutdown wrong... I even checked the scandisk bit to see if it was flagged for improper shutdown.. nothing..
NOTE::::
This doesn't happen when I close the system for a minutes or maybe half an hour...

The thread you're looking for is the Compal HEL80 Owner's Lounge. This issue was discussed somewhat in the earlier parts of it--I'm thinking somwhere between posts #150-225.
If you do a search with "standby", it should help you find the particular posts on the subject. I don't think a fix has been found as I personally think it's a Windows glitch from standby.
Some people were having problems when the system idled for a few hours and the LCD turned off and they couldn't bring it back on. But I've never been able to duplicate the problem on my system, so I can't say much on the subject. -
well, at least this is ONE thing that has been working in Linux better than in Windows hahaha..
Mandriva 2007, Suspend to memory (either through KLaptop or by closing the LCD lid).
i wake up the next day and everything is fine.
I'm using the latest 110B BIOS. -

If you're looking for a more proper fix, there is a windows hotfix I used, that I think I got from these forums, that fixed it. I'll see if I can't dig it up really quick.
It were this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917332/en-us
Credit goes to Sideshow Bob. I mean, to saturnotaku, for digging it up initially in the hel80 owner's thread. -
Thanks for digging that up. Looks like that's the fix for this particular problem.

I've never read of anyone having to pay for these fixes. You call them up, and they e-mail it to you. But if you don't want to do that, there are plenty of sites that host the file if you know where to look.
-
how strange... I thought all those fixes were publicly available (from microsoft, I mean). Wonder what's up with that.
-
If the fix is integrated into a service pack (or cumulative upgrade, or future service pack) they take the file down and require you to call so they can monitor the number of people who want this file. Also, if its really a niche file, same goes.
-
That's good to know. The few hotfixes that I've used were just readily available once your system diagnosed a problem--and they were right there.
Good to know you don't need to pay for it, but having to call in and ask for it is a bit of a pain.
Thanks for the information guys. -
Either way.. the hotfix worked... Thanks.
Problem with resuming?
